There are many sayings that come to mind when referring to the history of group. It is thought that you can’t get to where you are going without knowing where you came from. Many cultural groups have been discriminated upon and oppressed throughout the years. As a counselor I believe that is important to research and understand that history. In educating ourselves about different cultural groups, there is a chance that counselors become more equipped to help them with their struggles.
History and Theories of Counseling Most mental health professionals have not been trained to work with any one other that the main stream individuals or groups (Sue & Sue, 2016). In particular the African American group has been struggling with racism throughout history. The struggle started when the enslavement of African American people began. While African Americans were enslaved they were made to feel inferior and not even considered to be equal to those who were white.
