When I think about my cultural background and values I believe that it was heavily impacted by strong African American women. I grew up in a Christian home, therefore I have been reared in church since I was born. From the beginning it’s been my mother, my grandmother (deceased) and my siblings. We really didn’t have stable male role model in the home. Even though my family didn’t have much we took pride in what we did have knowing that I could be worse. My background has taught me to strong, however to not forget the struggle from whence I came from. Therefore as a future counselor, if I had a client experiencing struggles whether it be financially or emotionally I would be able to relate. Therefore, I would be able to use the skills that I have learned as a professional counselor and life experience to help my client. Personally, my brother and I were counseled when we were younger and she was at every appointment it she could make it. I come from a family that is not ashamed to say “I need help” if it’s really needed. If my Gigi was still here to give me advice on how to be a better therapist, she would tell me to stay true to myself and have a loving heart for the people.
