Culture plays a major role in everyone's life. In Antonio’s life, his parents are very strong believers of their own cultures and family history, essentially preventing Antonio from developing and becoming mature and causing great complications throughout his life. Cultural conflict develops Antonio into a mentally stronger person, he becomes a great person as he gains knowledge and becomes wiser. As disagreements develop within the family, Antonio’s life gets complicated over time, but as he matures he learns to deal with situations. Antonio begins viewing the issues from his own point of view, not by basing his beliefs off of anyone else’s. Due to the Chicano culture, Antonio now starts having a deeper meaning of the reality of life and death, as he witnessed Lupito’s death and “ the emphasis on familism is such that it includes not only the immediate family and extended relatives but fictive relations” ( Black 148 ). As he uses his knowledge over Catholics, he believes that mortal sins that are not confessed before death will lead them straight to hell. He wonders what happens after death, whether Lupito goes to hell due to the mortal sin because he never confessed, or does he go to purgatory before going to heaven. His mind continues to ponder over the true meaning of salvation, whether Lupito is going to be saved from going straight into hell or not. Much is running through Antonio’s mind at this point as he is listening to everyone around him, learning much about his family’s religious beliefs and questioning the ideas.
