Cultural Complexity Of Halloween

Decent Essays
When civilizations are connected to other regions through trade and conquest, it allows the mixing of cultures and even creates new elements. These elements can be food, religion, holidays, etc. The mixing of these different cultural aspects into something unique is called cultural synthesis and it is responsible for many holidays, such as Halloween. When two cultures combine, they have a surge in technologic advancements due to the sharing of cultures. When this happens, a single trait evolves to multiple traits, leading to cultural complexity.

Cultural complexity happens all over the world when regions are connected to one another. This is prominent during Halloween. Halloween started as a day to honor the dead in Europe, then was spread

Halloween and Day of the Dead are thought to be similar because they’re around the same time of year, but when you look closer, the two holidays are very different. The Day of the Dead celebrates dead relatives while Halloween celebrates the end of summer. The first difference is that the Day of the Dead celebrates dead relatives; anyone who celebrates Day of the Dead sets up a shrine for their dead relative (or relatives) so that their spirit can find it’s way back to their family. Halloween celebrates the end of summer, and we can go trick or treating and get candy. Both holidays celebrate something around the same time of year.…

To many, the end of October is a time of corn mazes, costume parties, and haunted houses. Many cultures celebrate harvest festivals during October, though none are as well-known as Halloween. Because Halloween is primarily descended from the Celtic festival of Samhain, when some think of Halloween, they think of bats and cats and witches. However, although Halloween as it is currently know is a wholly American creation with regional rituals handed down by generations, it did not become a “full-blown American holiday” until the turn of the century (Bannatyne). Because of the contemporary nature of Halloween, without Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Sylvia Plath’s “Lady Lazarus”, and George A. Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead, the holiday as we…

With Halloween taking place just about a month ago and me being a first-year college student, I found it suitable to choose a topic that related to both college and the holiday that so many of America’s youth actively participate in these days. So, I began my research; through countless amounts of Google searches and digging through all sorts of news websites, I finally found an interesting article from The New York Times. The title was “Why Halloween at College Is So Frightening” and was written by a man named Mark Bauerlein who teaches at Emory University. The periodical starts off by explaining the scary effects that Halloween can induce on the students and administration across many of today’s college campuses. This is particularly because…

As I passed through downtown Atlanta, I couldn't help admire the home of the Braves, not just because it was an architectural wonder but because it brought back to mind that very first lesson when Professor Van Huevelen sparked my curiosity when he said we find that there are some things in this world that are repeatable. Repeatable. Repeatable. So a baseball pitcher, if he throws a ball with the same speed and in the same direction, spinning the ball the same, it'll end up going about the same place.…

Halloween was extremely limited in colonial New England because of the rigid Protestant belief systems there. However, in the southern colonies, Halloween was more common since the beliefs and customs of European and Native Americans merged to what the American version of Halloween became. Soon, in the mid-1800s, immigrants from Ireland and Scotland brought their traditions that helped shape Halloween, including such traditions as bobbing for apples, telling ghost stories, and the early version of trick or treat which included people dressing up in costumes and going to house to house asking for food or money. By the late 1800s, the early version of Halloween was more about community and neighborly get-togethers than about ghosts, pranks, and witchcraft.…

Since the beginning of time, civilizations have been established due to the geography and climate in a certain area. Civilizations tend to arise in regions that are inhabitable and capable of sustaining life (Nate Sullivan).Whether they were located close to the mountains or the deserts, every little aspect of their surrounding effected them culturally and politically. Hominids, which were two-legged pre-human predecessors were said to be the first humans on earth, however it was not till later on that scientist found records of any kind. After the Neolithic Revolution, humans began to raise livestock and harvest food instead of hunting and gathering. The regions were so suitable that kingdoms were made.…

Halloween should not be used as an excuse to disrespect someone’s culture at the sake of your own “good time”. People have the right to take offense to someone portraying their culture as a negative stereotype. These citizens face microagressions everyday just for living their lives. Wearing day of the dead makeup or a hijab are taking things that are part of people’s everyday culture and turning it into something that should not be taken seriously. These are real symbols that are a part of who someone is and parading around in them for one day is showing the privilege that the costume wearer has.…
