Rational for the Proposal: When an LGBTQ identified person also identifies as spiritual or religious, the intersection of these two identities has a profound impact on the life of the individual. Each identity has a complex relationship with the intersecting identities. The nuanced dimensions of each identity weave together to form the lived experience. Intersectionality theory (Cole,2009) suggests that identities such as gender, race, class and sexuality simultaneously affect the lived experience of everyone in society that is stratified along these dimensions. To understand any one of these dimensions, they must be addressed in combination with intersecting identities. From a professional counseling standpoint, it is therefore advisable to internalize spiritual and religious competency in conjunction with LGBTQ cultural competency. …show more content…
First, it is important for counselors to understand the difference between spirituality and religiosity and to understand the mental health outcomes that are associated with these definitions. In addition, counselors should be aware of the Competencies for Addressing Spiritual and Religious Issues in Counseling (ASERVIC;2009). Finally, councilors should be aware of various negative therapeutic interactions reported by LGBTQ clients on topics relating to religion and spirituality.
