The number one thing I learned in today’s class on cross-cultural competencies was how important situational awareness can be when it comes to counterinsurgency tactics. I knew that it’s important to get a complete feel for your environment, so you can figure out the difference between what the people want and what they need. It’s imperative for a counterinsurgency team to become culturally proficient within their area of operation (AO). This comes with time and educating yourself with the society within your footprint. It’s not always important to know how the entire country works, but more about the people you interact with on a daily basis. You need to understand how the entire social structure operates, but a more concentrated effort on your cultural capability may have more benefits.

I have been all around the world and I have experienced numerous cultures, but I never allowed myself to become more familiar with their background and cultural upbringing. My family and I have visited a number of places such as South Korea and Dubai. Normally I would speak to my family so they can become more educated and pay respect to the locals by being more culturally aware.
In my professional life if given the time prior to a deployment I will do some research on the culture of the country and the people. I will also take this lesson I have learned and share it among my colleagues. It’s another example of something I wish I had learned ten years ago and I could have applied it during my deployments to
