Cultural competence is having a respectful and open attitude towards cultures other then our own. It’s valuing diversity and having the ability to recognise that cultural diversity strengthens a community setting. It’s making a conscious effort to meet children’s cultural needs, because as educators we need to understand that culture is a fundamental concept to a child’s growth and development. It’s having an understanding that families, communities, and children have different values, beliefs and attitudes based on their background and environment. It is more then just being tolerant and aware of diverse cultures, it’s celebrating those differences, and drawing connections between those differences to create an inclusive environment for all
