Even when we shift our focus from the major characters to the significant sub-character and the relationship among them we will notice that the identity of these characters on Uma’s side is not revealed till the end of the plot and that their identities are inter-mingled with one another. For example, the character construction of ‘Mama’ is completely dependent on her relation with Uma as mother and Uma’s father as a wife. Likewise, the character of Papa has his identity trapped among relationships. Papa is a character who is perpetually criticized for his neglect of his family members.
Similar, is the case on the western side the only difference being the extent of freedom provided on the western side. The character of Mrs. Patton is no different than Uma’s mother who is trapped in her freedom. While on one hand she has the distraction of shopping, particularly grocery, on the other hand, she is also enveloped in the fear of her husband’s disapproval of the things she does, such as her want to turn vegetarian. So is the case with Mr. Patton, who even though is a part of the western culture, holds a similar mentality as Uma’s
