Paul, I could only imagine what the initial reaction and tension would be like in the room if people from those two cultures met. You stated the following, “a smart leader should learn all they can about the customs of a culture that they are about to have dealings with.” I believe that this statement worth echoing. I have deployed three times to Afghanistan, and the Army spends a lot of time on gaining cultural understanding. Cultural education, training, and situational awareness are how the Army brings about cultural awareness. Cultural education often includes lessons on their history, religion, do’s and don’ts and anything that will facilitate cultural understanding.
