Case Study: Darby Fire Company

Over the past few years, Darby Fire Company has reviewed all 16 Life Safety Initiatives developed at a Firefighter Safety Summit in Tampa Florida in 2004 attended by representatives of the major fire service districts. Since the inception of these Initiatives, Darby Fire Company has been able to implement 15 out of the 16 Life Safety Initiatives to become a conscientious and informed fire company resulting in very few firefighter injuries. To begin, Darby Fire Company encourages cultural awareness throughout the department. For instance, when new firefighters join Darby Fire Company, they take part in a cultural awareness session to review how the diverse culture of the area is different from other areas. However, when a near-miss occurs, the company Safety Officer schedules a review session to critique the incident. Members analyze what happened and discuss ways to safeguard against future incidents. Then training drills are planned to practice safe practices. Darby Fire Company takes advantage and applies for at least two grants every year. Each year a different need is assessed and a grant application is written. By applying for a grant, in the spring of 2016, Darby received a grant to purchase a Plymovent Vehicle Exhaust Removal System for their two trucks. Darby Fire Company also receives grants in the amount of approximately $10,000 for the fire division and $15,000 for the EMS division each year to offset costs. Standardized response policies that follow the same protocols as all neighboring fire companies are utilized by Darby Fire Company. For example, the order in which each apparatus responds and the roles designated to each apparatus, are standard among the area companies. This ensures that everyone knows how the vehicles will be dispatched preventing accidents due to multiple apparatus trying to exit at once. In addition, Darby Fire Company maintains a webpage on the internet and a very active Facebook page that is open to the public to disseminate fire safety awareness.
