Cultural Assumption Of Romantic Relationships

Decent Essays
There is a cultural assumption that everyone must love to be in a romantic relationship. I however do not feel the same way about this assumption. At one point in my life that was all I could think about, was being in a relationship. It seemed everyone around me was in a relationship whether it was friends or family. I on the other hand never found myself in a position to connect with someone on a level such as that. It just never seemed to be in the cards for me. But with that also came the questions from others around me who was in relationships. After awhile of being by myself I began to become comfortable in the place that I was in. I began to observe that some of the people in relationships were not as perfect and happy as they portrayed

Cultural construction of sexuality can be defined as the view that perceptions and attitudes towards sexuality varies due to the diversification in values and practices amongst various cultures. In this essay, I will argue that sexuality is culturally constructed and explore the different ways in which it is perceived and understood, as well as analysing the reasons for these differences. Firstly, I will look at sexually restrictive cultures and discuss how religion and ethos cause some cultures to have strict morals and beliefs regarding sexuality. Secondly, I will go on to look at sexually permissive cultures and explore how some cultures have greater freedom and openness towards sexuality, exploring the alternative connotations of sexual…

Margaret Wente’s June 2016 article, ”How hookup culture hurts young women”, discusses sexual liberation in the form of hookup culture and its the negative effects on young women, is extremely misleading and opinionated. The write attempts to convince readers that feminists support sexual liberation through hookup culture, despite its harmful influence on young feminists themselves. Although Wente’s article does appeal emotionally to the readers, it also contains misinterpretation of Feminist theory as well as implication, bias, and assumption.…

American Society vs. Brave New World Society There is a plethora of things that differentiate American society from that of the novel Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. One of them is the quote “everyone belongs to everyone” (Huxley) which, in one sense, may mean that everyone in the society is equal, but in another sense, may mean that there are no relationships and everybody has sex with everybody like hippies in the 1960s. In American society, there are some people that enjoy having sexual intercourse with no strings attached meaning that there is no commitment There are also some people that do enjoy being in a relationship and then there are the people that only stay in a relationship long enough to have sex with the other person in the…

In the U.S., the biggest changes in the family are in its structure and changing priorities. In the past century, and particularly in recent decades, the definition of the family has widened to be inclusive of a spectrum of family structures, not just nuclear or traditional families. Less people are getting married and the divorce rate has increased, as have single parent homes and cohabitation, while birth rates have decreased. Ideas about gender roles in families have also been challenged with the women’s rights movement and the legalization of same sex marriage. There has also been an increase in interracial and interreligious marriages.…

In the article, “A cultural approach to male-female miscommunication” the authors Daniel Maltz and Ruth Borker talk about the different communication patterns of males and females. They talk about problems with male and female conversations and how we have a difficult time picking up on the opposite sexes verbal tendencies. The authors give an in depth analysis on how male and female think on a psychological level during a conversation. Women have many key tendencies in the way they communicate that make them completely different from men. First, “women display a greater tendency to ask questions” through my experiences this has been proven true.…

Cultural Relativism is in many aspects what one group of people finds acceptable may not be accepted by another. For example, the styles of clothing that are popular and considered acceptable among American women is not the same standard of what is acceptable to women whose cultural origins are of Middle East. The case of the Hmong man kidnapping and raping an American woman is one that would be considered of extreme cultural relativism. To be completely honest upon first glance I was appalled and automatically decided that yes this man is indeed guilty and needs to be charged adequately. However, with that being said from a sociological stand point I also know what I value to be morally correct is not viewed in the same context from the view point of other cultures.…

I have plenty of friends who have been in relationships that were not great and that has played a role on why I have not engaged in one. I have always had this ideology of getting married and having a family and how I feel a relationship should be because of my family. I have come to a standstill in finding what I would like in a relationship and trying to figure out what I want for my life career wise. That is why casual sex is something that is convenient for more because I can have the sex that I want and do not have to deal with the burden of a relationship while I am trying to figure my life…

Influences of Sexual Behaviors Throughout the course of history, natural law inadvertently created a culture that in and of itself bears a certain level of responsibility in shaping the sexual behaviors of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations. The principles of natural law as standards have been applied to theories of ethics, politics, civil law, and religious morality (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2011). Digress to 636c, and the dialogs of Plato, who’s writing first articulate central ideas of natural law. In Book One of Plato 's Laws, he describes opposite-sex sex acts as pleasurable by nature while same-sex sexuality is unnatural (The Project Gutenberg, 2008).…

Dating is defined as being romantically involved with someone. The subject of dating and relationships is riddled with controversy because of the many different beliefs residing in today’s society. The most prevalent issue associated with dating is the debate concerning homosexuality and if they should be permitted to marry. While the world seems caught up in commotion a different pressing issue often goes forgotten to all except those who directly encounter it. Christians often argue over unequally yoked relationships, though this particular subject does not entangle as many people as the debate on homosexuality, it is still an ever pressing issue for today’s society.…

The discussion of gender communication has become a largely controversial debate. Culture plays an important role in how these differences occur and the perceptions of men and women are constructed by culture. Studies have showed us different views of different communication styles between men and women but the conclusion is the same, no matter the reasoning, there is a clear difference between the way the different genders speak. We observe these differences from day to day and can easily define them however when it leads to discussing about why these differences exist, it is then where we split into different sides. There are two distinct perspectives which emerge from the studies of gender communication.…
