Communication is a very important component in health care and include verbal and non verbal. During a cultural assessment, the provider or nurse should first of all assess the client needs for communication to avoid any barrier to communication such as, language, listening, understanding and the ability of patient to express self. Here we should ask question and find out language preference of the patient and what language he speaks or read at home, to properly assess them (Andrews, Margaret M., and Joyceen S. Boyle, 2016). The health care professionals should determine the listening, understanding and expressive ability of the patients in case a recommendation is needed (Campinha-Bacote, J, 2011). Nutrition is also an important part of a cultural assessment and composes of nutrient that keeps the body healthy and aid in healing process. We should assess patient for any nutritional disorder (bulimia and anorexia, and food tolerance), know what type of food they eat (some food can interact with medication therapy), how is it serve, what type of utensils they use them (Andrews, Margaret M., and Joyceen S. Boyle, 2016). I happened to have some patients who use hands to eat instead of utensil and some don’t eat pork, beef and fish, so I have to be aware and check their food whenever it’s being served. Last but not the least is the educational background of the patient. Education is key to health assessment and care, and therefore we have to assess the level of education of the patient to determine his/her knowledge regarding health related issues: know what learning style are they familiar with, can they read and understand health information and materials handed to them, and their ability to access the internet for health related information?
