There are institutions like schools and hospitals that for one reason or the other have a predominant race on the employees; but there is no segregation, or it is very difficult to find a predominant race in the personnel at Bellevue. This enriches the service because most of the employees speak at least two languages. Another aspect I have observed is that at the work place the status of the occupation overrides the gender or the race statuses. I mean two nurses one Russian and one from the Philippine will share more than a nurse - doctor/ a technician – clerk / volunteer- security guard from the same race or origin. On this last case (since the person is not sick and of course, can’t stay in the hospital) the social work service is called. They interview the patient and direct them to a shelter, I have to make clear that the recommendation of the social worker does not assure that the patient is going to be accepted in the shelter, because these centers have their own requirements. When they are not accepted, or voluntarily leave the shelter because of the violent environment, and the difficulties of the place (the location is just offered to sleep, in the morning they have to leave and return at a specific night time) they return to the hospital and are addressed to social services department again.
