The cultural artifact that I chose was my lacrosse stick. It represents how lacrosse has been a continuous occupation throughout my life. It is an essential thing needed to play lacrosse. Even though I do not play on a team anymore, I still keep it with me because it holds special value to me. My occupational roles associated with lacrosse include being a teammate, an athlete, and a student.
I selected this object because my lacrosse stick enabled me to create special bonds with my family, more specifically my brother and father. For instance, playing a team sport helped me to learn communication, leadership, and responsibilities. One of the ways that I learned how to communicate was if I ever felt frustrated or angry on the field I would tighten my grip on my stick instead of saying something negative. This response mechanism helped me understand that by collecting my thoughts first, I would be speaking clearly and not out of frustration. Moreover, this came into play when I had to communicate to my coach and captains off the field in a respectful manner even if I had opposing views. This also related to my occupational role as a student because in the classroom I needed to converse with teachers and mentors. Furthermore, I was responsible for all of my equipment including my stick. As a result, I kept it in prime condition, which taught me to take care of valuable things. My stick also played a part in developing leadership skills. Each day, I would spend an extra thirty minutes before practice with my teammates working with our sticks so that they could reach their full potential. This helped my occupational role as a teammate because I was able to bring my skills and knowledge of stick skills to the team in a supportive manner. My personal values were sculpted in a positive manner from lacrosse and I have applied them to my everyday
