Justice Everyone holds their own definition of what justice is, though the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it, as the process or result of using laws to fairly judge and punish crimes and criminals (Merriam Webster). Although the idea of justice is connotative to good intention, Marcus Tullus Cicero author of The Defense of Injustice, shares a different perspective to the notion of justice. In a persuasive dialogue, Laelius gives Philus the challenge to defend the idea of injustice, in which Philius successfully accomplishes, establishing a powerful argument. Cicero insists that the idea of doing the right thing and having a good intention comes from human weakness and not from the idea of justice. He believes that the idea of justice…
In 1821, Mexico had declared independence from Spain. Its land stretched from Guatemala to Oregon and it was equal to the size of the United States. Americans wanted to push their own culture on them, an action called cultural imperialism. Mexico had had their own culture for so long that they weren’t ready to give it up. The United States army crossed the Nueces River and began to trek towards the Rio Grande.…
Kwame Anthony Appiah’s paper highlights the contamination of native cultures by globalizing influences. Surprisingly, Appiah wrote this piece after UNESCO’s came to an agreement for protection and promotion of the diversity within cultures. Whether the importunate to protect cultures or individuals is necessary, Appiah believes that the individual must be the focus of moral concern. Appiah realizes that although monoculture is still in existence today, their distinctiveness has diminished compared to a hundred years ago. For Appiah this is a good thing as many of the negative cultural beliefs like the fear of medicine, the disapproval of clean water from foreign places, refusal of female’s getting an education is being dispelled by outside forces.…
Appreciation or Appropriation? Have you ever stopped to think about Halloween costumes? Dressing up as a Latino or a Native American is considered normal in our society. However, these cultures aren’t meant to be costumes.…
In her 2006 article “The Trouble with (the Term) Art”, Carolyn Dean argues that the using the word “art” for both past visual expressions (particularly nonwestern) does not quite capture the true definition of what these pieces are. This argument is valid, to consider these works as mere entertainment erases a culture’s true history and identity. Dean has a very strong argument for the analysis and retirement of the term “art”, however the ideas surrounding the concept of “art” explain the larger issue as a whole. Carolyn Dean argues that pinning the recent idea of “art” on nonwestern works does not inform one about the culture, but rather condenses that culture into easily defined novelties.…
3 Tocqueville The Danger of a Non-Violent Oppressor According to Tocqueville there is so little freedom of thought and debate in America, because the majority controls the minds and actions of the entire population. Unlike in an absolute monarchy, the American majority ideals penetrate the morals of each individual causing them to not want to behave outside of the norm. Americans refrain from expressing different ideas because they fear ostracism - in this system, even when people agree with the minority, they avoid associating themselves with it for fear of exclusion from society - thus the minority does not grow.…

In the course of recent years, there has been a national civil argument with respect to whether school and professional sports organizations should utilize Native American symbolism as their mascots, monikers, and additionally logos. At a base, there are two clashing perspectives: (1) Keeping this symbolism respects Native American individuals, underpins nostalgic emotions, and spares financing; and (2) Keeping this symbolism is hostile and debasing in light of the fact that it is honored to Native Americans and propagates negative stereotypes. Supporters contend these pictures are complimentary, not "harmful," and are not disrespectful to every single Native American. Individuals in resistance refer to research that demonstrates enduring negative…
It is well known that Western culture and the Western world has endeavored to assert itself over other cultures for many centuries. Beginning with the colonization of groups of people deemed lesser by the standards of white Europeans, who often forced their customs or religion on people they had colonized, Western civilizations continue to push their cultural standards on other parts of the world, especially when it pertains to art. In the essay, “The Trouble with the Term Art”, Carolyn Dean raises questions about the overwhelming western standard of art, and how different cultures have different views of aesthetic beauty. The central argument of Dean’s essay is that the normal definition of art has been skewed to only include the values of Western society.…

In the last Chapter, Rachels discusses the creation of a "Satisfactory Moral Theory”, in this paper I will discuss my own creation of the Satisfactory Moral Theory. The moral theories are supposed to help us decide what are the right and wrong actions, but, not all the moral theories are perfect. We may feel that a certain conclusion to a problem is fair or unfair, but what theory do we use to make judgments?. I will start with the cultural relativism theory, to understand different cultures, There is a need to know that one community’s beliefs and practices are not usually the same as the other community. In fact, cultural relativism seems the most applicable approach to be taken on for communications purposes.…

What is Cultural appropriation? Cultural appropriation: is a sociological concept which views the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of a different culture as a largely negative phenomenon. It has become normalized in media to take specific components from different cultures and weave it into “trends” while downplaying the significance of those same components to their cultures. While cultural appropriation seems harmless to those who do it, it is demoralizing to those societies, people need to be aware of the ignorance that they are demonstrating by picking and choosing what they consider to be the “cool” aspects of a culture. Cultural appropriation is a topic that is currently highly debated and criticized.…

Culture is the essence of human interaction. It is how the world expresses the passions, inspirations, and purposes of differing lifestyles, when simple conversation won’t suffice. We exchange cultures for a mutual understanding of how those of the same race perceive the world in an estranged point of view; the extensive evolvement humans have made throughout different environments, behaviors, and beliefs. Although culture is what unifies the global society, it also divides. It shares the human affinities and juxtaposes dichotomies.…
