“Once you understand and appreciate other people’s cultural backgrounds, then you also connect with them more.” This anonymous quote is an example of what should occur in America, but the total opposite is happening, entire races are being ridiculed and judged as a result of a lack of understanding. This ill judgement is “cultural appropriation” which is a concept used when a member of one culture ignorantly judges a different culture which has become a negative phenomenon. In today’s society, there are a plethora of these incidents and I disagree with this continuing because the majority of this judgement is taken by African Americans. Throughout history, black people have been ridiculed for how dark their skin is, and for any other race especially Whites to now take on the “Black label” that their ancestors made fun of for so long are cruel and disrespectful. There is a difference between trying to understand another race and impersonating it, and Dolezal crossed that line. Another example of this line being crossed is with Kylie Jenner, Julianne Hough. Kylie Jenner took a picture and captioned it on Instagram stating, “What I wish I looked like all the time, thank you @marcelocantuphoto @joycebonelli” (Ishler). Jenner thought this was an innocent picture by the photographer whom she was posing for, but, in fact, this is another example of cultural appropriation. Jenner claimed the picture was taken using black and neon lights at a photo shoot, which presented a false image to appear as though she was wearing makeup. This is an example of cultural appropriation because black people are being made fun of because of their skin color even though they thought they were doing this innocently for Hough it was for her Halloween costume in 2014.
