So, you bounce up in your office costume party. You know you got it going on, because from the looks of it you have on the best costume in the room. A coworker comes up and instead of saying “I like your costume,” says wow, your costume counts as cultural appropriation.”
What? You are like whoa! I am not doing anything that is racist! Your intentions was never to defend anyone, and you definitely do not want others thinking that you have a racist bone in your body.
First thing, stop stressing! You need to know the definition of cultural appropriation. It is when somebody adopts aspects of a culture that is not their own. However, if you want to go deep it means that a dominant cultural takes on the elements of a minority culture who have been systematically oppressed by the dominant group. So, if you were thinking that it is the same as cultural exchange, no it is not that. Nor, does it mean the same as assimilation.
Some say, for instance, that non-Western people who wear jeans and Indigenous people who speak English are taking from dominant cultures, too. Look at it this way, marginalized groups do not have the power to decide if they want to stick to their customs or try a dominant groups culture, not even if it is just for fun. It’s a complicated matter that has to be put in the right context when used.
