Friends in grade school have mimicked ways I have worn my hair I don’t think it was to hurt my feelings, but it was because they like the way that it looked . Back then it made me feel sad about how my hair was done now looking back understand what was going on which was cultural appropriation . So having my hair fixed whether its ponytail, bun or braid . Having my own style mean a lot because no one can take that something as a person has to choose or also own. I feel it makes my whole outfit complete. As an adolescent, my grandmother always instilled in my mind that my hair was my glory. It defines so several things, but I’ll mention one. Everyone has their own hair and their own style, and what they have an interest in. That’s something that you have to own as a person. Sometimes people will try to mimic you, or sometimes they want you to mimic them, or put pressure on you if you don’t look a certain way. “Don’t Touch My Hair” is the reflection within lyrics of you. Praising your style, your look, It’s cool to be you. Solange’s whole movement promotes that. You miss out on so much by trying to mimic someone else’s style. This is why I also relate to the lyrics stated

In her recent work, "Political Correctness devours yet another College, fighting over mini-sombreros" Catherine Rampell depicts two students being impeached for celebrating their Latino friend's birthday by wearing mini-sombreros to socially act like a Mexican can be offensive to other Mexicans and to Bowdoin College. I've always believed that people who culturally appropriate their culture to another are not human decency. For instance, the fact that the tequila themed partygoers dressed like Mexicans of the Mexican culture as funny or to mock that culture is culturally inappropriate. In Rampell's view, this act is known as, "cultural appropriation" (pg 2). Rampell agrees when she writes, "Bowdoin students that were Americans created…

Insecurity Growing up on a farm with two older brothers, I was a bit of a tomboy. From birth until age seven, my favorite toys were Tonka trucks and wooden guns. I wrestled in the mud, ate like a teenage boy, and at the age of five took scissors to my hair, chopping it into a pixie cut, so I could “be like my older brothers”. Innocently, I wore my barn clothes to school and my kindergarten picture displays my hair in a rats nest, with a large crooked smile, and bright eyes. However, that yearbook picture changed as my innocence faded away.…

Growing up in an economy where every model has long luscious hair and it is flowing in the pictures it is common for young girls of African descent to ‘perm’ or ‘relax’ their hair in order to achieve the mainstream goals of beauty. I along with many other members of my family have tried to achieve said beauty. Natural hair however is harder to maintain and in itself rewarding. Life with my relaxed hair was what most would call easy. A simple part and press in the morning…

Often, women walk down the beauty aisle of a department and grocery stores and see all types of merchandise for their hair, but not many know what the products are right for them. They see products that promise to rejuvenate dry, damaged hair; volumize limp, flat hair; straighten curly hair, and regenerate thinning hair. With my hair being a kinky curl, when I was younger, I would ask my mother if we could buy relaxers and apply them at home. She would give me the same answer every time, “This should only be performed by a professional if you do not want to ruin your hair.”…

I remember being a little girl and having to sit through the agony of my scalp feeling like it was on fire and being told to sit there and take it because it was “the price of beauty”. This is a statement I had heard and known all too well. When it came to the burns to the backs of my ears and nape of my neck from my mother straightening my hair with a hot comb heated from the oven, I was pretty much a professional on the price of beauty. We as young African American ladies are taught very young that these manipulations to our hair are so we look “presentable” in public. As we get older, these hair routines become the norm therefore to look presentable we must not wear our hair the way that God or whomever created it as it…

    I. Home as refuge/protection In Ode to my Mother’s Hair by Joseph Legaspi and The Road Back by Pak Chesam, home is expressed as a matter of refuge and protection. The two poems are similar in the fact that “home” is defined as a symbolic figure, which is the mother. For example, in the poem Ode to my Mother’s Hair, the comparison of the mother’s hair as “dark as cuttlefish ink,” (Legaspi 9) signifies a mother’s natural instinct when danger is sensed. This analogy provides a vivid imagery on a mother’s character in that they would defend and protect, like a cuttlefish secreting ink, when danger lurks.…

American society accepting something simple such as a hair texture has allowed me to feel welcomed in American society. Society has previously created a demeaning relationship between ethnic hair and professionalism. For instance, natural hair is labeled and unprofessional, while white, straight hair is known as professional. As a woman of color, working two jobs (both high positioned on campus) I was not discriminated because of the texture of my hair. Professionalism is being an expert at a specific skill and my hair should not affect my abilities to do my job in a workplace.…

Humans are surrounded by poverty everywhere they go, but never realized the long lasting effects of it in our society and individuals. In the essay "Black Hair" by Gary Soto, he explains the life of a young seventeen year old Mexican who struggles on the streets to make a decent living . Soto is able to portray the emotions and experiences of his life by writing the essay in first person. The audience has the opportunity to relate towards what life is when not having a place to sleep at night, being tired from work and dirty because there is no home to go to and shower. Likewise, in the story "Sonny 's Blues" by James Baldwin, a black teacher living in the "ghetto" city of Harlem, explains in first person the struggles of his brother Sonny…

What is Cultural appropriation? Cultural appropriation: is a sociological concept which views the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of a different culture as a largely negative phenomenon. It has become normalized in media to take specific components from different cultures and weave it into “trends” while downplaying the significance of those same components to their cultures. While cultural appropriation seems harmless to those who do it, it is demoralizing to those societies, people need to be aware of the ignorance that they are demonstrating by picking and choosing what they consider to be the “cool” aspects of a culture. Cultural appropriation is a topic that is currently highly debated and criticized.…
