Gender roles and equality vary across cultures. Gender roles and equality are greatly influenced by historical and cultural contexts. The following examples are supposed to give a glimpse about gender equalities in different cultures.

Social class and time has been the main determinants of gender differences in Japan. Women have individual rights to have an obligation in the family, rights to choose and occupation and a spouse, retain custody of their children and inherently own property in their names. Women have the right to vote in Japan and just few barriers are present to equal participation in professional and social life.
A common Japanese proverb that influences gender roles/equality in Japan is “good wife, wise mother.” Both women and men encourage this social belief that it is the woman’s role and the best interest of the society to stay at home and take care of the children. However, in most Japanese households, women are responsible of the budgets and make independent decisions about careers, education, and families’ lifestyle. Educational prospects are evident with career women emerging and almost 50% of the Japanese workforce comprises of women.
