Being from the Seattle area, I know UW’s culture will be more conducive to an open and multicultural social experience. Growing up, cultural and religious traditions were subtle ways in which my parents introduced me to my Indian heritage. I was exposed to a variety of festivals and events within the Indian-American community, including Diwali, Eid, Christmas, and Thanksgiving (without the turkey). These events have shown me how diversity can create unity instead of conflict. Being exposed to culture to me is all about learning about people and about the world. UW boasts a vibrant and active South Asian community with cultural events like UW Bhangra, which I was exposed to during last year’s Desi Dhamaka event. Additionally, UW’s Henry Jackson School of International Studies, with its South Asian Center, will allow me to explore my heritage through relevant courses like Social Movements in Contemporary India, events and talks, and the study abroad
