Culture and traditional perspectives of health care may differ across cultures and generations requiring health care professionals to build upon their cultural competency knowledge through ongoing study, reflection, and time (Spector, 2017). Complicating health care across generations is the American healthcare system and public mistrust while health care professional serve their own interests resulting in a disregard for the concerns of more vulnerable patients, such as those with multiple sclerosis, as a result of the need to accomplish more in less time (Brannigan, 2012).
Fortunately, because health and wellness differs cross generations and cultures, recent research protocols are more likely to be driven by patient perspectives as the delivery of care for people with long-term illnesses is becoming increasingly centered on the patient (World Health Organization [WHO], 2006). Moreover, a culture of treatment by interdisciplinary teams is emerging with a model to offer patients an improved, more seamless approach to health and wellness services (WHO, 2006). Unfortunately, the stigma and discrimination against people with neurologic disorders continues to exist globally (WHO, 2006).
