When a society has more power, it looks more attractive to people, so that society can use its power to impose its culture on other societies (Lee). “ The assimilation of the norms and values of the dominant group leads to acceptance and to higher social prestige” (Feigenblatt 43). This theory is especially present in Western culture. “The spread of Western culture throughout the world is due to the upsurge of Western power in modern times” (Lee). As Western culture has increased in popularity and gained momentum around the world, other societies have latched onto that and adopted part of Western culture into their own culture. However, this theory has other sides to it as well. A society becoming weaker can lead to them absorbing the more dominant society’s culture. Although, when their power begins to rise again they will gain more confidence in themselves, throwing out the foreign culture (Lee). Whether a culture is accepted or not can depend on their dominance, and the state of the cultures elsewhere. It can start with education. If people were more educated on other cultures, they might be more accepting. People sometimes have misconceptions about other cultures that can cause them to reject people from those cultures. “Attitudes can be changed by thoughtfully considering stereotypes and misperceptions of people and their culture” (Manning 79). It would be beneficial for a lot of people to learn about cultures that are not their own, and they will develop respect for those other cultures when they realize what they are really all about. Getting to know others from different cultures can help as well. “A change in attitudes requires firsthand contact with people individually or in small groups” (Manning 79). Doing just one or all of these things can improve cultural acceptance of others and be helpful for our
