The first take away from the course so far is the activity we did with Caleb Cash. The concept I am taking away is that privilege and race greatly influence leadership. The color of my skin and the background I grew up in greatly influence my ability to lead. People of color and in poorer areas do not always have opportunities to lead and are not always respected because of where they came from. In order to be an effective leader I must overlook race, because at the end of the day it does not matter.
I also must keep in mind the privilege I hold on a daily basis. The activity with Caleb that we did was a good reminder for me. I know that I hold a lot of privilege, but I often times forget how many other people have to suffer because of it. I am very fortunate to be a white woman born into a very rich family. The family I was born into has allowed me to have several opportunities to develop into a leader. I have learned in this class that part of being an effective leader is realizing that everyone is different. The differences between us are not right or wrong, they are simply different. In class we talked about Triandis and how there are tight and loose cultures. As a leader, I need to keep in mind that depending on the culture my followers will influence what they expect of me as their leader. In addition, it is important to validate each culture represented in a workplace. Versus trying to change my followers into believing my culture is the proper and only way. Because I have learned different aspects of culture, I know this will help me be a better leader at the end of the day. I will definitely take this concept away and become a better leader because of
