The Cultural Revolution was a political, social, and cultural movement created by Mao but it was kept going by political leaders. Mao encouraged all high school students to start revolting and question anyone who is thought to be an enemy of communism. There are two factors that played a big part in the Cultural Revolution. One reason is because of Mao’s efforts to regain his dominant position as China’s policy maker. The second reason was the “Cult of Mao” (Mao’s China worksheet). In 1966 the communist party launched the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. Mao shut down school and universities calling for all students and young people to judge and question party leaders. Soon after, high school students from all over the country started a group called the ‘Red Guards’. This group harassed and attacked members of the CPC, teachers, village leaders… etc. The group got so out of hand that even Mao couldn't control them. 1.5 million people were killed during the Cultural Revolution, and millions of others suffered imprisonment, seizure of property, torture, or public humiliation. The Cultural Revolution soon had an impact on the entire country now and for years to come. The Cultural Revolution caused China’s economy to collapse. The Cultural Revolution led many people lose their possessions. Politicians, landowners, and the high class society lost their jobs and properties. The lives of many Chinese were changed for the worse. More citizens became peasants and worked on the farms in order to afford foods and earn money for their families. The amount of rice grains produced a year decreased and cotton production also dropped.
