How would you communicate these objectives to students?
There were two objectives in the Nora Scenario; a weather objective and a language objective. The weather needs students to draw the water cycle process correctly: clouds produce rain, rain creates puddles, the sun dries up the puddles due to evaporation, which then forms new clouds (University, n.d.). The language objective states along with drawing the water cycle students will describe this cycle identifying key science vocabulary terms, orally or by hand gestures, when shown an image of the water cycle (University, n. d.). The differentiation of the language objective, the use of hand gestures, seen when English Language Learners (ELL) or special ed students, students with learning disabilities, use this option to demonstrate their understanding of vocabulary terms

Penny Kittle examines a difficult topic for many ELA teachers to wrestle with. Outside reading for students has been discussed at various times, and the current standards do not promote this type of learning in the classroom. However, Kittle gives step-by-step examples to integrate this area of growth for our students in a positive way. She takes a topic that students do not like, reading, and makes it accessible and easy to understand. Without these approaches, I would not have a fully developed plan for next year, and her guidance and ideas have now given me a full approach to outside reading for the future.…

Houston also addresses the needs of his linguistically diverse students. He employs a strategy called Showing While You Talk (Herrell & Jordan, 2008, p. 161). In this strategy verbal explanations and physical movements help to explain concepts and instructions (Herrell & Jordan, 2008, p. 161). Throughout this lesson, Mr. Houston uses several gestures like pointing at the learning goals, hand gestures and circling important words to help signal to ELL students that information is important. The visual clues given assist students in understanding content and are extremely valuable to the academic language…

This portfolio is a representation of the observations completed for the class M464 – Methods of Teaching Reading taught by Dr. Hope Smith Davis. These observations have been conducted and recorded by Joshua Lindsey, a teacher candidate at Indiana University South Bend during the spring semester of 2017. These observations give prospective teachers a chance to be immersed in a content-area classroom and to witness day-to-day operations within the secondary classroom as they occur. While these observations were sparse (one class period a week), teacher candidates were able to observe the same classroom and the same group of students which gave a sense of fluidity when it came to viewing the evolution of a particular classroom during a seven-week…

Prior to opening Content Area Reading: Literacy and Learning Across the Curriculum (Vacca et al., 2014), I had never thought of literacy as something that was vital to a high school math class. I was under the assumption that math was comprised of working through problems with students to find the solution, but I now recognize that there is greater knowledge to teach and learn. Chapter one of Content Area Reading opened my eyes to the importance of teaching content literacy. A study conducted by Harold Herder (1964) demonstrates this point, for he found that “students who used ‘study guides’ to read a physics text significantly outperformed those students who did not use guides to read the content under study”(Vacca, 2014, p. 18). Students who were assisted in understanding how to read the material comprehended a greater amount of what they were reading.…
