Cue For Treason Peter Character Analysis

The novel, Cue for Treason, by Geoffrey Trease, gives an opportunity to look at a world that might have not otherwise been known. Throughout the novel, a fourteen year-old boy named Peter Brownrigg is telling his story through his eyes. Peter becomes an admirable character that is easy to identify with. He is a common, but brave, boy who takes great risks and is loyal to his friends and his country. All through the story he is put in dangerous situations but is always determined to solve the problems that are placed on him. Therefore, Peter is a very heroic young man. For example, when Sir Philip searches for Peter backstage at the play, “King Richard the Third”, Peter thinks quickly and hides inside a coffin. Peter says, “[Hiding in the coffin] [is] a desperate chance, but the only one. I [hop] inside and [pull] down the lid” (Trease 43). The quote proves his determination to flee Sir Philip, as the man will have him arrested or killed if he catches Peter. Peter took advantage of the resources that were there and used them to solve his problem. In addition, Peter also perseveres in perilous conditions by pushing his limit. After freeing himself from Duncan at Ullswater, Peter knows the only way to get back to Cumberland is to swim there. Despite the harsh weather and cold water, Peter thinks, “I mustn’t give up. I mustn’t give up” (201). Peter does not give in to his exhaustion and tells himself that if he gives up, the Queen will be slain and the kingdom will be thrown into anarchy.
