It can be subconscious or right in your face. There are levels of control that make you act or think a certain way. It could also be labeled as societal norms depending on what you're controlled into doing or thinking. The other term for this control could be laws that legally make you act a certain way. But there's a 3rd level of control, threats. Threats don't have a legally binding way or outside pressure to make you do something. The second use of control is rules and laws to control the patients. There are rules set in place to make sure the patients act right. The punishments can be severe or they can be mild. Their most heinous punishment was "Now lobotomy, that's chopping away part of the brain." "(31 Kesey). This was their final punishment for controlling people. If you didn't like the way they were acting, you could cut a part of their brain to make the patients not be able to do anything. This is what happened to McMurphy after weeks of trying to control him, which resulted in giving him a lobotomy. He was uncontrollable, but the ward got the last laugh by ruining the rest of his short life. They used the most harsh punishment imaginable and gave it to him so they could control him. The third use of control they used was a threat. Another term for this is fear. The patients get fear struck into them by the ward. Mainly though by Nurse Ratched. A lot of the fear is miniscule like taking away a room or the tv just to get her way, but some of the reasons are extreme. The most notorious example of this occurrence is, “It’s alright Billy.
