They were using each part of the theater including isle. When narrator will speak whole theater will be dark and sound would come from the wall. McMurphy is a loud, rebellious character and his many efforts to fight for what is right for the patients exhibits key characteristics of those of a Christ Figure. “Nobody can tell why exactly he laughs; there’s nothing funny going on”,(page 12, Kesey).McMurphy, the moment he enters the mental institution automatically changes the attitude of the patients by bringing something odd, laughter. The patients idolize McMurphy and even more so when he performs miracle like actions, for example, when he was able to set up the fishing trip and bringing the prostitute. Just as he shares emotional characteristics with Christ, he also shares a physical resemblance. McMurphy shares a head wound at the end of the novel, which acts as a connection to the wound of Christ by the crown of thorns during the crucifixion.…

Kesey creates this rebellion and these battles to exemplify how the only way to overcome the power of authority, is to fight back against it. McMurphy is seen as a hero because of his rebellious way of living in the ward, which is a true testament to his sacrifice and ambition. After McMurphy is finally defeated by the nurses, and dies, Nurse Ratched tries “to get her ward back into shape, but it (is) difficult with McMurphy’s presence still tromping down the halls and laughing out loud” (Kesey, 321). Even though he eventually dies, McMurphy is not forgotten amongst the fellow patients, and amongst the nurses who are forever wounded by his bravery. Kesey creates the Christ-figure character to show that mentally ill patients are in need of a savior, and he makes allusions to hell to show the serious problem in mental wards, which he experienced first hand in his personal…

For my concert critique, I went to Jason Terry’s Doctoral Piano Recital on Tuesday, December 1st at the School of Music in room 206. Because Terry was able to pick the pieces he played, he picked a range of different pieces to emphasize his wide range of talent. He included older and modern pieces including Bach, Godowsky, Balakirev, Zorn, and Liszt. The first piece he played was “Prelude & Fugue, BWV 872” composed by Bach. I was a little unsure about the nature and form of this piece because it was unlike some of the more structured pieces we listen to in class.…

When professor mentioned that we would watch and discuss about a Broadway Musical show named ‘Memphis’, the first that came to my mind was, the actual city Memphis in the southern state of Tennessee. I was still confused as to how a city and its activities could be incorporated into a Musical show, which is assumed to be entertaining with melodramatic components, dance and music. I had an assumption that it would be academic, political, boring since it is to be watched in a classroom setting and that a professor would not choose something entertaining or something of the liking of the younger generation. I deduced that this play might touch the topic of race since race defined how a person is treated in most southern states. I assumed that…

Obviously McMurphy is seen to be a sturdy leader by the Acutes, strong enough to stand up to Nurse Ratched and her ward policies. However, he cannot continue to embrace this reputation if he wishes to influence the nurse. When he first steps back from the group meeting, observing instead of participating in it, “he surprised everybody on the ward, [...] Surprised everyone but the Big Nurse” (p. 172) This implies that the patients are shocked to see a resilient man belittle himself as the image the nurse wants.…

Life is a fragile collection of events and perceptions. Each perception has the potential to change in an instant, but only if the individual is emotionally involved. In “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” by Ken Kesey, Kesey demonstrates that life remains an illusion until traumatic life events alter this self-perception--providing the individual is capable of experiencing empathy. In the cases of Bromden and McMurphy during their time in the mental institution, their view of reality alters drastically by events they witness, while there is no change experienced by Nurse Ratched as she is unable to experience empathy.…

She intends, literally, to make it a struggle to the death. McMurphy dominates the ward, and even when he tries to conform after he learns that his dismissal will only be at the Big Nurse’s approval, the patients are no longer willing to accept the authority as status quo. When McMurphy realizes that the plight of his fellow patients is more important than his own escape of this institution, he sets about to bolster their own manhood and self confidence to make them able to regain lives in society again. In this contribution to make others successful, the term “madness” becomes more ridiculous as an adjective assigned to McMurphy’s nature. While some may view McMurphy as insane or suffering from “madness” in the process he uses to heal the other patients, he is only giving them something to…
