Cubing: Instructional Strategy In The Classroom

Cubing is the next instructional strategy that I chose. The reasoning behind this is because I tried to choose instructional strategies that I am not familiar with. After conducting research, I found that cubing is an instructional strategy that is used to encourage students to consider a concept from a variety of different viewpoints. A cube is a six-sided figure. This strategy calls for a cube to be used, which requires a teacher to have a different activity on each side of the cube. Cubing activities can be done individually, in pairs, or in small groups. Each student will take a turn rolling the cube and be assigned to complete the assignment/activity that is associated with the side of the cube that is selected. If a student does not like the activity that he/she gets, then he/she can have another chance to roll the cube. This can only be done once, during this activity, project, or assignment. By using this strategy, students will know what they need to understand and remember from the text. They will also know what to do based off of the information provided to them, when it comes to being quizzed or tested over the unit from the textbook. I also plan to use this strategy, when having students to compete during preparation time for a test or quiz. For example, one cubing activity may call for gifted students to be grouped together to make it more challenging. Another activity may call for students with different readiness levels to be grouped together according to their interests.
