Cuba's Graduation Speech

Improved Essays
I went on an excursion amid an August moon
I met her on the shores of La Habana
I look into her eyes and saw her beauty and diversity
I looked into her heart and felt her love and friendliness
After reminiscing for while I asked her, what is your name?
My name is Cuba
I am filled with memories of defiant love and clashing futures
I looked into her eyes again and saw burning desire
I looked into her heart again and saw the scars of the impoverishment
I asked, do you not recognize me?
Our love and passion then turned so revengeful
Years of resentment has made me so weary
Your schemes to subvert my historic revolution
Cuba then stared at me silently
I dream of a world where we can be one human family
Parents working all day and night

David Wallace Foster’s Kenyon College Commencement Speech is extremely successful for a multitude of reasons. It is not so much inspirational or revolutionary or epic, just simply honest. His speech is blunt about what people will face in their life after education. That adult life is boring, repetitive, trivial, tiring. Yet despite being adult life being unsatisfactory, Wallace always says it will only be those things because of your perspective.…

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed - we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal," were the words once spoken by Martin Luther King Jr. His vision was that one day, “little black boys and little black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” These notions are being regarded in our everyday lives. He spoke with ethos, pathos and logos- appealing to a variety of cultures.…

The JFK Inaugural Address Kennedy's Inaugural is considered one of the finest ever delivered by an American president. Many political historians agree that the speech delivered characteristics of realism, idealism, historical reference, and strength, all of which are necessary to a successful presidency. Kennedy was clear that the United States would pay any price to assure the success of liberty. He was a Cold Warrior with a tone of strength, but he knew that every nation would be listening to the speech, especially the Soviet Union. The speech also suggests that with freedom also comes a responsibility, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.…

The Cuban Heritage Collection (CHC) Library houses thousands of written documents on Cuban life and culture. After hundreds of hours of research in the library I went on to compose a creative short story called Fort Chafee-1980. Briefly, the story is about the two Cuban children, Ernesto and Maria, and their daily struggles living at the undermanned and overcrowded Cuban refugee resettlement center of Fort Chafee. I would later go on to present my work at a university wide symposium. An excerpt from my story was actually published by the University of Miami in Cuban Identity and Diaspora, which can now be found in the CHC Library.…

I turned to see my country, my origins and the family and friends that I left behind. The booming voice called out for my little family of four to board our plane, a plane that would take us to the depths of a mysterious alien world. Or at least that’s what little six-year-old me thought when I left my home country of Cuba to come to the United States. That was a time of emotional turmoil for me, feeling the pain of leaving everything and everyone I knew behind. There was the excitement and fear of coming to a new unknown place, but there was also a feeling of dread at this vast language barrier that I was facing, and finally accepting and adapting to this new life. Coming from Cuba was a difficult experience that helped me grow and learn.…

“Miami isn’t too far; it is ninety-five miles away at the most…” Her cherubic features made it hard to fabricate an excuse for wanting to stay in Cuba. I wanted to convince her to condone the actions of the corrupt government.…

In the poem, I started with the question “¿Mamá, estás llorando?”, which means “Mama, are you crying?” in English. During the interview with my mother, she told me one of the only memories of their immigration was that she remembered asking my grandmother if she was crying. At the time of their immigration to America, my mother was only nine years-old, and didn’t realize what was going on. As they drove for eight days to this new country, my grandmother stated that she told her daughter she was crying for a number of reasons, including not seeing her family for a long time.…

Carlos Eire beautifully constructs his memoir in his work Waiting for Snow in Havana. Eire talks about his childhood and how he was raised in Cuba and in the United States and how Castro’s rule affected his and his family’s life. The two major themes woven throughout this work is one of loss and longing; both about a past-life taken and a future life stolen. Eire speaks of what his life might have been like and writes about the life he found instead. “The world changed while I slept, and much to my surprise, no one had consulted me.”…
