Most people hear the word “immigrant” and think “illegal.” This is an unfortunate connotation that doesn’t take into account the millions of immigrants who are here in the United States legally. By using the word “immigrant” as a negative phrase, we deny the importance of immigrants to our society. The U.S is a nation of immigrants, and while we do not need to have open borders, we also need to recognize the importance of our American identity. We are a country that values helping others, that is why more than 60,000 refugees and azylene's applied to the United States to protect them from persecution and abuses in their home country.

I talked to my mentor about different ways I could present my project to the class and we came up with different cool ideas but we thought the PowerPoint was more practical because if anybody had any questions I could share my sources or go over slides again since my purpose is to teach them about immigration. Making the PowerPoint was interesting because I did a lot of research about the 4 different waves immigration from Cuba and I found a lot of useful information. It was quite shocking to see how many people fled to the united states during those times. I had firsthand experience with immigration myself because I grew up in Cuba and it's not bad place at all at least not for me but for my parents it was different story. My parents growing up were poor and struggled a lot because of the politics and the way the government was set up. As I was doing my research I came across different videos of different youtubers interviewing random people from the street as a social experiment asking what was their perspective on the word "Immigrants". It was sad how many people said "Mexicans" or "illegal" and that made upset because immigrants are not all illegal and they are not all Mexicans. So I told myself I was going to ask the class what did they think the word immigrant mean to them and then after I would tell them the real definition of the word according to dictionary.com. I think it’s a great idea because it would be ye opening to see what other people think and maybe my PowerPoint could change what they think.
