The United States initially recognized the change in leadership; however, in 1960, Fidel Castro’s move to develop trade deals with the Soviet Union, his nationalization of foreign assets within Cuba, and the raising of taxes on U.S. imports led to swift, American retaliation. President Eisenhower established the Cuban embargo, froze Cuban assets within the United States, and severed diplomatic ties with the Cuban government.
