Unit 3 Principles and practice of assessment
My methodology for writing this essay is so that I can gain my Ctlls qualification and support my own teaching practices. In my research for this assignment I have used books, the Internet for various websites and my notes from the lessons, as well as my own experience from teaching.
Assessment is used so that I can check that learning has taken place and to what extent. I use assessment at all stages of the learning process in line with organizational requirements; firstly by conducting an initial assessment with the learner. Self assessment, for example I use a mid-course review sheet, helps the learners to take a critical approach to their own work where they highlight areas where they feel they are competent, areas that need immediate attention and areas for future development. A reflective account written by the learner summarizes how they felt about the course and this is supported by my written observation of their progress.
Curzon (2004) suggests that peer assessment could be used when completing a project where a group of learners get together, each with a role in the group. Upon completion of the task the learners go back to the group and discuss any issues they may have had in completing the task before giving feedback on how they could have done better and in what way.
Peer assessment can also be more direct in that the learners may be given a set task e.g. a questionnaire to complete and these are swapped and checked by other learner’s then question and answer and a discussion could take place to clarify any incorrect answers. Spoof assessment can be used by supplying the group with two pieces of work one which is correct the other incorrect they choose which is which and discuss why.
With each piece of work I use questioning at the start to clarify that the learner has understood what is being asked of them and then again at the end to check that they have completed it correctly. Asking open questions in a group situation
