Today, people begin to question sports regulations due to a massive discovery of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis being found in the majority of athletes. As a whole, people are not seeing the true effects of athletes are struggling through. When one football game is over, fans continue into the next week and expect the same CTE-ridden athletes to endanger their life. However, this has been a national crisis we all have been blinded to for years. Changing the regulations of the game for the greater good is necessary and needs to happen quickly.

Discovered by forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu, this disease is said to cause most, if not all, of these diseases as it was discovered in 2002 through an autopsy of a former footballer Mike Webster. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy could be caused due to the repetitive brain trauma which leads to a build-up of an abnormal protein within the brain. As its begin to rapidly produce within the brain cells, The abnormal protein known as Tau begins to progressively kill off brain cells. Due to this finding, Omalu found similarities of this disease with Dementia Pugilistica which was majority founded in Boxers during this time period. Boxers would be diagnosed with Dementia Pugilistica, or the “punch drunk” disease when suffering a concussion and resisting to rest. However, going without recovery from a concussion is highly dangerous and could lead to permanent brain damage that will shorten your life. Many athletes throughout the years are pressured to perform at high quality while suffering concussions in a contact-to-contact sport. Through autopsy of affected athletes brains, we are able to ensure concussions and repeated head trauma is one of the key factors due to the popularity of CTE being found in athletes. Head trauma can go beyond sports, such as military veterans getting Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis due to blasts receive during their service.
