Life is all about balance. Every activity a human being engages in, there is a requirement of the opposing force to allow that activity to be more fun, and overall create a more entertaining experience. There needs to be an even playing field, amongst participants, to create the most blissful experience possible. Activities we immerse ourselves in consume our full interests, and captivate our attention. Csikszentmihaly’s report of the ideal “flow” experience, which explains the importance of action and awareness, goals and feedback, and concentration have been proven in my life and are most definitely applicable to my everyday life and interests. Musicianship requires flow. As a pianist and vocalist, I have seen how Csikszentmihaly’s analysis of the optimal experience and what is required to achieve it comes into effect and how much of an impact it has had on my training in both areas of music. When learning a new tune, whether it be singing or playing the piano, it is crucial to fully involve yourself in the piece. Like Csikszentmihaly says, “When a person’s relevant skills are needed to cope with the challenges if a situation, that person’s attention is completely absorbed by the activity …show more content…
What Csikszentmihaly’s says about the idea of goals is a concept I have seen strongly in my formal vocal lessons. I have grown an ear to hear what is good singing and what is wrongful singing. When I am able to hit the high e note, like I was instructed to, I am aware I have succeeded and done well. When my voice isn’t as strong as it can be, I am certain work needs to be done in order to be the best I possibly can be. Like the tennis example given (Csikszentmihaly 322), my vocal training is a reflection of Csikszentmihaly’s concept of the importance of setting goals.
