One name that we did not find out the true meaning of was Oedipa’s. Oedipa’s name is a reference to the Greek myth Oedipus who according to Encyclopaedia Britannica tried to find his identity after he was abandoned at birth and ended up killing his father and marrying his mother (Encyclopaedia). We can see from the commonality in their names that Pynchon purposely used the name Oedipa; she had to search for answers to the mysteries of the Tristero as Oedipus had to search for his parents. I also believe that Oedipa had to search for her true identity. Oedipa assumes many roles and identities throughout the course of the novel to try and fit into society. By doing this she is limiting herself and her interactions with the other characters because she cannot express herself in ways that she may need to in order to receive some help in the solving the conspiracy. Oedipa’s roles included a housewife at the Tupperware parties, a student when she meets with Emory Bortz, a stockholder when she interacts with Stanley Koteks, and a patient and a therapist when she visits Dr. Hilarious (Pynchon). Each role that Oedipa acquires is significant to her journey but they ultimately limit her ability to interact in the necessary ways to receive the information she needs. Oedipa …show more content…
Many people in our society may not be pleased with their actions and decisions in the real world but in the online world it is like starting over so they create a fake profile. These profiles are then used to communicate and interact with “friend”. Once these individuals with fake profiles begin communicate and interact they give these people fake information and the person on the other side of the computer screen or smart phone never gets to truly know who you are. These fake profiles people create can be difficult. Unfortunately I have had a personal experience with fake profiles. I did not create the fake profile, but a former friend of my sisters did. I hate to write this but it shows how something like this can get into your head and ultimately affect your life as it did for Oedipa. My sister had just moved to Atlanta, GA for a new job. One of her coworkers at her new job had offered my sister a room at her apartment, she moved in for the time bring until my sister could get her own place. My sister and her friend became best friends and lived together for 2 years. My sister and her friend ended up having issues that eventually led to a disagreement and my sister decided to no longer be friends with this girl and moved out. For months my sister’s friend reached out to her and apologized for what had happened, but my sister no longer wanted

Is Facebook Really Changing Our Society? In his essay “Faux Friendship”, William Deresiewicz discusses the impact of social-networking websites on how modern society perceives friendship. Deresiewicz argues that websites such as Facebook convey a false sense of connection and extinguish the intimacy that composes a true friendship. He also claims that the dynamics of Facebook leave no room for deep conversations, and concludes by claiming that the online social media imported the principles of professional networking to interpersonal human relations, damaging their personal nature.…

The popularity of the internet in recent years has led to the rise of a vast amount of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter. These sites give their users the ability to present and record their lives online and make it available to others to inspect. This usage is generally harmless, however a small percent of people use social media dishonestly by creating fake accounts in the effort to deceive others and boost their own egos in the process. This is shown in the direct cinema documentary Catfish, directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost, the story follows Nev Schulman who develops a relationship with a family and in particular, a young woman around his own age; however, this online family has been a lie and was all a creation…

He had everything taken from him, but the one thing he had left was his name. No matter what happens in life, the wrongs, the rights, a person’s name is something one will always have.…

To be on the receiving end of a message that seems to never arrive can be bothersome and provoke dismay. To have a message that you cannot get across can be even worse. To hide something, not truly understand it, or be unable to vocalize a message can be distressful in an entirely different way than waiting for a message. In Franz Kafka’s “A Message from the Emperor’, a messenger tries endless to get a message across to an anonymous person, but is never successful. The messenger is the only one whom the Emperor told his message, and now that the Emperor is dead, no one may ever know what the message truly was.…

Entropy and Meaning in Thomas Pynchon’s The Crying of Lot 49 In modernity, the narrative of scientific progress operates under the assumption of order and linear progress. But with the rise of postmodern theory, these assumptions begin to be called into question to provoke new scientific discourses based on indeterminacies and discontinuities. The Crying of Lot 49 poses the same questions of the possibility of scientific knowledge and the search for intrinsic meaning. Pynchon follows the scientific model of question and answer, except that he subverts the formula to reveal the answer as question itself.…

Beginning in the 1990’s, a new movement emerged alongside postmodernism known as Third Wave Feminism. After fighting for legal and social equality by standing up against patriarchal oppression, the goals of feminists broadened to break down concepts of gender, sexuality, and the body (Rampton). Queer Theorists such as Judith Butler branched from this new movement in Women’s Studies to examine the reality of identity and attack the problematic perception of heteronormativity, the belief that humans are normally heterosexual and distinctly male or female. In The Crying of Lot 49, Thomas Pynchon challenges the traditional perception of a gender binary through the protagonist, Oedipa Maas, who represents the fluidity and choice of gender identity as asserted by Queer Theorists.…
