For this analysis, I analyzed the documentary Rize. The story setting is focused on African American youth, during a time that was very controversial in African American history, in the United States. The introduction to this documentary depicts this time that was filled with violence and rioting involving African Americans, including the Watts Riots in 1965 Los Angeles, as well as the infamous Rodney King Riots in 1992 Los Angeles. In the documentary Rize, the themes of expression of emotion and dance as social and personal healing are represented by the dancing, costumes, characters, and music in the film.…
Hopsin, a rapper known for having abstract songs that loudly express his opinion. Recently released the song “Fly” which overall is about his dislike of todays market. He explains marketing techniques and tries to voice the way the system takes advantage of the average person. He even gives personal examples saying that all his teachers told him education is the only way to make it and gives the reply “then how did I get so much in my savings”. Overall through his song Hopsin explains multiple economic techniques and devices.…
In assessing a performance, I approached it much as an adjudicator for a University Interscholastic League One Act Play contest is charged. I begin by reading the play, which I was vaguely familiar with and possibly considering as an option for my students. I find when I choose a play (especially for contest) I spend more time with it, in pre-production researching and preparing, and it is usually a longer season with the contest play. (Most shows go up in four to six weeks and run for one to two weeks, while contest pieces rehearse for six to eight weeks and can run for up to six weeks.)…
In Dancing All Night, we catch up with the members of the Investigation Team half a year after the ordeal of the Midnight Channel. Rise has enlisted the aid of Yu and the others to assist in her comeback as an idol by serving as her backup dancers. She is headlining the Love Meets Bonds festival together with an exciting up-and-coming act called Kanamin Kitchen - whose members later disappear under mysterious circumstances. There is an eerily familiar rumor closely tied to the festival; if one logs on to the official website at midnight, a video of a presumed dead idol dancing plays. If one watches the sinister movie to the end, one's shadow is transported to the other side, leaving behind a comatose husk.…
The musical ‘Singing in the Rain’ is about Don Lockwood, an actor trying to make one of the first talking films with his co-worker and friend Cosmo Brown and Kathy Seldom. In the scene ‘Make ‘em Laugh’ Don Lockwood is depressed over his film and Cosmo tries to cheer him up. This scene demonstrates the three musical theatre elements of acting, singing and dancing. They are used well to tell this story. They effectively demonstrate how Cosmo is a happy, fun person who likes to cheer people up.…

In order for this to happen, Butler uses the Fantasy genre to displace Dance from her own time period, and send her back to antebellum Maryland. During Dana's third trip back, she learns from Rufus that it is 1819 (62). While the previous trips on lasted a few hours and Dana did not have much time to interact with anyone other than a handful of people, during this trip Dana meets Rufus's entire family and many of the house slaves, including Sarah. After Dana and Kevin, who was transported back with her this time, arrive and get Rufus back home after he breaks his leg, Rufus's mother quickly relegates Dana to the kitchen to get her away from her son. Because she was not given directions, Sarah's mute daughter, Carrie, escorts Dana to the kitchen, and the moment Dana walks in she notices Sarah.…
You sit down to read a book to let your imagination go and you realize that the story you are reading is bringing back memories instead. Every story has different impressions on each individual reader depending on the reader’s experiences. In reading Sherman Alexie’s fictional memoir War Dances it brought back memories, anxieties, and disappointments that created mixed emotions within me. A part in the story that brought back a memory is when Alexie describes a scene between the narrator and his Native American father.…
The same emotion is again seen at 4:25, but this time it was up close. Her hands were covering her mouth and her eyes are what draw in all the emotion. Her weeping body motions are a reflection of the emotions in her facial…
In 1909 Sergei Shchkin, a Russian industrialist, asked Henri Matisse for three large paintings to decorate part of his house (Matisse, Dance I, n.d.). Dance 1 was one of these paintings (Matisse, Dance I, n.d.). Two versions exist of this painting, the initial version, was considered by Matisse as a preparatory sketch and was created in 1909 while the final version has different colors and was finished in 1910. Both versions are considered oil paintings (Matisse, Dance I, n.d.). “Dance 1” has a similar design than another painting he made in 1906 titled “Bonheur de Vivre” (Matisse, Dance I, n.d.).…
E.Y. Harburg said “Words make you think. Music makes you feel. A song makes you feel a thought.” (E.Y. Harburg). This could not be more evident than in the song “Love Yourz” by the rapper J.Cole.…
Singin’ in the Rain (1952) directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen is one of Hollywood’s most famous musicals. As a big fan of musicals, it’s surprising that I have never seen this infamous film. I had preconceived notions about what it would be like and I thought that I wouldn’t enjoy it. However, the movie was nothing like that I thought it would be and I enjoyed the “behind the scenes” style of film that the director used to show the transition between silent films to talkie.…
The Ballad of General Fisheye, of the People’s Liberation Army Earl Lovelace’s, “The Dragon Can’t Dance” is the story of the people living in the town of Cavalry Hill, a slum in the Port of Spain. Oppression and poverty runs rampant throughout the city and plays a heavy role in the everyday life of most of its residents specifically, a man named Fisheye. Fisheye, the former leader of an anti-oppression group, portrays the oppressed citizen in that he both characterizes someone who is being oppressed and also resists, but ultimately cannot stop his white oppressors. Through dialogue, acts of violence, and rebellion Fisheye embodies the perfect idea of someone who is being persecuted. To show how Fisheye is being oppressed and how it affects…
One of the most incredible video that I watched to complete a Dance Observation assignment for Dance class is the video of: “Wade in the Water from “Revelations” by Alvin Ailey Company. This video was published on YouTube on November 25, 2007 and performed at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. This video is very beautiful and impressive at the first time I saw it. Then I keep watching it again to really focus on the detail of very movement and sections. The dancers presented a movement of an African American slavery era being empowered by drowned in the water but keep standing strong tightly.…
Discipline, balance, and commitment. These three concepts are the most valuable factors a dancer must present in order to perform to their best ability. Teachings that not only develop a dancer into a skilled entertainer, but also help form a well taught human being. As a child, I was never a prima ballerina and my love for dance didn't begin at an early age.…
