“She has had cancer for 2 years now.” Those words said by a doctor at Clarion Hospital changed my life, for the worst. The doctor had told me, that my nan, the women who has guided me all my life and had been another mother to me, has been slowly dying for 2 years now and I was just told. At first I was thinking in my head, so why has she not gotten chemo? Why is she letting herself die when so many people love her. When the doctor told me it was a little late for my Nan to get help because it had already spread throughout her body, I was again lost for words. It all started out as cervical cancer. According to www.livehealthyaustin.com, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer worldwide.

Radiotherapy uses high-energy rays, usually x-rays and similar rays to treat disease. It destroys cancer cells in the area that's treated. Radiotherapy has proved itself to be very effective when it comes to patients with cervical cancer that has been giving radiotherapy. Surgery and radiation therapy remove, kill, or damage cancer cells in a certain area, but chemo can work throughout the whole body. According to Cancer.net, “When detected at an early stage, the 5-year survival rate for women with invasive cervical cancer is 91%. Approximately 46% of women with cervical cancer are diagnosed at an early stage. If cervical cancer has spread to surrounding tissues or organs and/or the regional lymph nodes, the 5-year survival rate is 57%. If the cancer has spread to a distant part of the body, the 5-year survival rate is 17%.” Cervical is not considered to be inherited. In 99.7% of cases with cervical cancer, the cancer starts from persistent infections and/or HPV. After researching cervical cancer, I have a better headset about this cancer. My nan recently decided to fight back. Last week she got a port put in to be able to start her chemo and went yesterday to let the doctor’s determine what kind and how much chemo to start her on. I will continue to follow her and help her along her journey, while knowing more about her
