Cruelty has been seen all over the world, from the non-stop terrorism to middle school bullying, it has never disappeared. Since the early ages of human life to this day now, cruelty has been displayed because of different opinions, not being content with themselves, and other emotions that can turn into barbarity. John Steinbeck has portrayed some examples of why humans are cruel to each other in the book Of Mice and Men, which tells the story of two best friends having to deal with the ups and downs of reality. They travel long and far to make a new life for themselves, driven by a goal. They experience many different emotions of cruelty that is demonstrated by their fellow friends on their new ranch. In the manner that jealousy can lead to cruelty, Curley express his insecurities by stirring up trouble with Lennie. When Curley first sees Lennie, he noticed that he was bigger and stronger, which makes him jealous. Candy explains Curley’s behavior, “‘Well...tell you what. Curley’s like a lot of little guys. He hates big guys. He’s alla time picking scraps with big guys. Kind of like he’s mad at ‘em because he ain't a big guy’” (26). This quote shows how Curley is intimidated and jealous that Lennie is bigger and stronger than him. He is also insecure about his own stature, so as a way to help cover up his own flaws, he used Lennie’s inability to think for himself to advantage by giving him a hard time. Another encounter of jealousy turning into cruelty is when Crooks yelled at Lennie for walking into his space in the barn. As a colored man, he did not have the same rights that all the other guys did. He was not allowed to hang out, have a normal life, or even walk into any room because of his skin color. During the time he has lived in the ranch, he had grown accustomed to keeping his distance and others keeping theirs, so when an energetic and harmless young man approached him, he was quite baffled at first. Later on, he became very rude and ignorant to Lennie because he was jealous that Lennie had the right to walk into his little, private place. Crooks exclaims, …show more content…
Directing our own emotions onto others is clearly being demonstrated by characters like George, Curley, Curley’s wife, and Crooks. Cruelty might never end, it might as well be part of humans, but there will never be an excuse to such a horrendous act of being. For instance, The Holocaust period, one of the most inhumane act that has ever occurred in the world. Adolf Hitler, a German politician, had a great hatred towards Jews because of religious beliefs and used them as his scapegoat for Germany’s economic downfall. He killed more than 11 million people because of his own emotions towards them and his selfish ways of showing other leaders just how powerful he was. Although this is an extreme example of cruelty, the ones that go unnoticed are the ones that impact us all daily. From the age of 10, kids were being exposed to the concept of bullying and cruelty, either being the bully, witnessing it, or being bullied. The most common reason for being cruel to others is because the bullies want to feel more powerful by putting down others. This is also seen in the book when Crooks and Curley are cruel to others to deal with their own insecurities. People can also deal with their emotions like Curley’s wife and George, turning their frustration into cruelty, enforcing it on
