Chikatilo was born on October 16, 1936, in a Ukraine village called Yablochnoye. He was born with nearsightedness and lasions and water in his brain. During his childhood the USSR was at war with Germany, which caused a great famine. He grew up in a one room hut with his parents and younger sister. Due to their financial struggles, Chikatilo slept in the same bed as his parents. This led to humiliation and violence because Chikatilo was a chronic bed wetter, which is believed to be because of his brain lesions. His mother, Anna, would beat him as a punishment every time he had an accident. Later in his teens, Chikatilo’s genital-urinary tract problems led to inability to sustain an erections.

In 1943 Chikatilo’s mother gave birth to his younger sister, Tatyana. However, because Chikatilos father was away fighting against Germany, he could not have been the father of his younger sister. It was well known that during World War II many women in Ukraine were raped by German Soldiers. It was speculated that Tatyana was conceived as a result of rape. It is also speculated that because Chikatilo and his mother shared a one room hut, that he may have witnessed the rape of his mother.

At the age of 15, Chikatilo had his first sexual experience. He had overpowered a girl around the age of 12 to the grown, Chikatilo unknowingly ejaculated during the struggle as the girl tried to escape. This would forever link his link his aggressive emotional state to his stimuli for sexual desires.
