Although nowadays the death penalty is not carried out the same way it was when Jesus got executed, but the same concept applies. Today, common methods of the death penalty includes lethal injections, the electric chair, gas chambers, single or group shootings, hangings, beheadings, and stonings. In a lethal injection killing, two IV tubes are put into the victim 's arm. Sodium thiopental, pancuronium bromide, or potassium chloride is fed through the tubes. Within a minute or two after the last dose of the drug is given, the executor will declare the victim dead. In the electric chair, the victim is strapped down to a chair with metal straps. Electrodes are then placed on the head and leg and depending on the physical state of the victim, the levels of electricity and time span is determined. The general volt amount is 2,000 volts for fifteen seconds which ultimately would make the heart stop beating and make the victim unconscious. The volts are lowered gradually and eventually will kill the victim. Cleanup of this execution is not pleasant, especially because the heat from the electricity can melt the victim 's skin. Although carried out differently, today 's executions and crucifixion both have the same purpose and are performed for some of the same reasons. The Church would like us, as Christians, to speak out against the execution processes because we are all guilty of sin. Many people, like Pope John Paul II, already have started the movement of stopping executions from happening in today 's era. Jesus went through tremendous amounts of agony so we would not have to go through the same pain, but many people do not know or forget this and punish people by killing them in similar ways as Jesus was.
