Crucible Pre-Reading Response Today's court cases completely go against the statement that Justice is best determined in a court of law.An example of how justice isn't always best determined in a court of law would be a white teenager who killed four people in a car accident, and was only on probation instead of receiving a criminal sentence. In 2013 Ethan Couch a 16 year old white male was conducting a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol ,in the process he crashed and killed four other people. His sentence was supposed to be a maximum of 20 years in prison for the charge of intoxication manslaughter, instead this teenager was given 10 years of probation. The jury made this decision because his parents hired a psychologist that was …show more content…
However Jahmar did not recieve 10 years of probation such as Ethan Couch did , instead he was to severe 12 years in prison (6 years for each person), also 5 years of mandatory parole. For this reason i believe that court cases go against the statement that Justice is best determined in a court of law.Ethan couch had an advantage of being white and wealthy, as where the second teenager Jahmar was neither white or wealthy.Because Jahmar was not rich and was from a lower class he was unable to pay off a physiatrist to diagnose him with something so he could get off with probation. There are probably about another several other cases that might be similar to Ethan Couch's and are not receiving the 10 year probation he is.I believe some people are not given a fair sentence. How was it that Ethan Couch a white teenager was able to remain a free person in the world after committing a crime and killing 4 innocent people , but as soon as a similar situation happened to Jahmar James an African American, the sentence has changed and he wasn't a free man. This definitely was eye opening to me and made me aware that racial discrimination is occurring in courtrooms. This was only comparing two cases , I can only imagine how many other cases there are in America that continues to give advantage to some people simply because of their skin color or social

Really, no one argues that those living in poverty hold a disadvantage. Not being in possession of any significant wealth makes for a much more difficult lifestyle: poor living conditions, less food, and lower social status. But technically, the poor ought to be equal to everyone else. After all, those with less money than others still remain citizens of the United States and human beings, right? However, Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson shows that your wealth greatly affects your treatment in the justice system.…

“Being a teenager is an amazing time and a hard time… you get the best and the worst as a teen” but sometimes teenagers get carried away. The ”Affluenza Teen” case has prompted many people to discuss social issues such as drunk driving and reckless behavior. 16 year old Ethan Couch killed four people in a drunk driving accident; however, his defense team argued that he suffered from “Affluenza”. Although he had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit, the judge only sentenced Ethan to ten years of probation and time in a rehab facility versus twenty years behind bars. “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller has been told through text, film, and live theatre, I have recently seen the latter, performed at Palm Beach State College and directed by David A. Hyland and Rae Randall. “The Crucible” is based on the horrendous deeds done during the 1692 Salem witch trials where, “19 were hanged on Gallows Hill, a 71-year-old man was pressed to death with heavy stones, several people died in jail and nearly 200 people, overall, had been accused of practicing "the Devil 's magic" (Blumberg par 10). When the play started there was a man, Rev. Parris, praying over a still girl, his daughter Betty, laying on a bed. The story line begins quickly as his niece, Abigail, begins defending herself by insisting that she and the other…

Justice is an ambiguous concept with no accurate definition. One man’s idea of justice differs from another man’s idea, depending on the circumstances. Some people see justice through the eyes of the court system, while others see justice as “an eye for an eye”. Still others see justice through fairness and moral equity. An individual defines justice based on their personal belief of what is right and wrong.…

In Act one of the crucibles it talks about it talks about reverend Paris and how he came across his niece and other girls dancing in the woods. It also tells us about his niece Betty and how she becomes sick after reverend Paris discovers the girls dancing. it also shows us how they believe there to be witchcraft involved with betty 's sickness, it shows us this when reverend Paris describes seeing the girls dancing but while they were dancing he discovered a pot on the ground, but the main reasons leading them to believe witchcraft was involved were how Tituba sang songs and apparently made the girls drink blood but another key event is how betty the reverends niece would scream and cry when hearing anything or any pray the had to do with the lord. Also to try to make sure that witchcraft is involved they brought in Mr. Hale, because he was educated in this particular area. Another major event that took place in act one was how Abigail…

As you can see white people really don’t serve their full sentences, while black people are more likely to serve prison time. This shows that African-Americans are less valued by society because they are more likely to serve their full sentence compared to whites. But for some people they think white people serve longer sentences. Which isn’t true because “Black and Hispanic men are more likely to receive longer prison sentences than their white counterparts since the Supreme Court loosened federal sentencing rule “(Taylor). We can see that there was a rule that is loosened for white people.…

It results in an unfair system; every study has shown that our institutions are biased.” For minorities the justice system today is not innocent until proven guilty, it’s guilty until proven innocent. Many color children suffer biases in comparison to their white peers. For example, President Obama states “An African American youth is more likely to be suspended from school, than a white youth engaging in the same activity.”…
