This play is called The Crucible and is a drama that takes place in the 17th century during the Salem Witch Trials. It all started when reverend Samuel Parris caught his niece Abigail and some young local girls dancing in the woods casting spells with his slave Tituba. Parris does not want the gossip of witchcraft in his house hold so he does not admit to the town that he saw the girls casting spells. The town is formed at reverend Parris’s house because his daughter Betty is sick and the town’s people suspect evil illness. Abigail the leader of the girls threatens the girls that if they speak to anyone about what they did in the woods she would find them and kill them. She is the one that created the whole drama of the play. She is a self-centered person that only wants what’s best for her and was willing to kill multiple townspeople to achieve that. Her main goal was to make John Proctor her husband and get rid of Elizabeth.
• The Crucible was Claire’s debut at Theatre Calgary. She is regularly seen on film, television, and voice-overs. She is also a classically-trained singer, having concerns in five languages.
• Claire portrayed Abigail William very effectively. She was able to go into Abigail’s character and portray her evil and self-centered character.
Reverend Samuel Parris – Kevin Corey
• Samuel Parris is the local revered in Salem and is Abigail Williams’s uncle. He is the one that initially saw the girls including his daughter Betty in the woods dancing and casting spells. • Corey did a great job of jumping into Parris’s character and portraying his devious and self-centered attitude.
John Proctor – Karl H. Sine
• John Proctor is the main character in the play and most of the drama is centered on him. He had an affair with Abigail Williams when his wife Elizabeth was sick. Abigail later got kicked out and Proctor vowed to be loyal to his wife and be a good husband. But once Abigail got kicked out she wanted Elizabeth gone and now proctor has to prove himself to her and stay away from evil Abigail.
• Karl H. Sine has done productions for theatre Calgary before like Pride and Prejudice and Enron. Sine works as an actor and director, and is certified fight instructor with the Academy of Fight Directors Canada.
• Sine portrayed Proctors character in an extremely believable way and expressed his emotion with fire and passion. He did a very good acting job overall.
