CH. 1: What’s a Crucial Conversation?
Q: What is a “crucial conversation” and suggest its importance to working within a group dynamic? Briefly address the video “Jurassic Sales Call” in light of the chapter contents.
R: According to the text, crucial conversations are defined as, “a discussion between two or more people where the stakes are high, opinions vary, and emotions run strong.” (pg.3) At first glance, one may shallowly assume that high stakes, varied opinions and strong emotions are a recipe for tension and even failure. But if we examine these three elements of a crucial conversation, we see that they are actually a recipe for a healthy challenge and lead to personal or group growth. Though many humans would say they do not enjoy

2: Mastering Crucial Conversations
Q: What is “dialogue” as it pertains to the text and, use a personal story to illustrate the meaning. In what way(s) have your learned quality dialogue skills?
R: I have personally learned quality dialogue skills in ministry, specifically in the one-on-one conversations I have had with various people over coffee. When you first sit down across from one another, coffee in hand, you must start with casual dialogue. It helps build a comfortable environment and understanding of where the other person whom you are conversing with is at. Building dialogue will help one grow closer to starting the crucial conversations that truly make an impact. The point of dialogue is to lead into crucial conversation, we cannot miss that. We cannot avoid crucial conversation for fear of offending someone or loosing a friend. (pg.22) Dialogue is important because it is the foreground of telling the tough truth. When sitting with friends over coffee, real ministry happens after a period of solid, edifying dialogue. Dialogue helps those who would normally sit back, trying to go unnoticed by not speaking up or engaging in crucial conversations- certainly not addressing them, gain a comfortable platform to engage. (pg.26) Even passive people have valid opinions. Dialogue makes discussion safe.

Throughout the semester I’ve noticed that the authors Baron, Swales, Bazerman, Alexie, Sommers and Newkirk had brilliant ideas in their text about ideas of writing. All these texts we read this semester had their own importance, but the most significant texts to me were Swales, “The Concept Of a Discourse Community” and Alexie’s text, “Joy of Reading and Writing: The Superman and Me”. Swales describes a discourse community as a group of people who come together and share a common set of discourses. Alexie’s text sheds light on Swales idea of a discourse community, in his text he explains his life and how when as a kid he life was being constrained in his “discourse community” because he was Indian boy who taught himself how to read and write very advanced at a young age. Discourse…

In the articles “Three Cheers for the Nanny State,” “Ban the Ban!,” and “Soda’s a Problem but…”, all three authors present their arguments with facts, opinions, and counterclaims. However, one article presents itself better than the rest. I believe that the article “Soda’s a Problem, but...” was the most convincing article. Sarah Conly- the author who wrote “Three Cheers for the Nanny State”- argues that the soda restriction is a good idea because people would be stopped from making foolish decisions that they’ll pretty definitely regret.…

I agree with all of Burroway’s ideas, but that is partly because I had already learned most of them from past classes. I already knew the three main types of dialogue (summary, indirect, and direct) and I’ve always thought they were helpful for me. In fact, one of my assignments required me to write a scene containing nothing but dialogue, and this scene also had to include all three types. That assignment was great practice for writing dialogue that served multiple purposes, and I’m happy to share my submission for it if you would like me to.…

When most people think of a history class they imagine sitting in a dark lecture hall taking notes off a PowerPoint presentation, memorizing a few dates and people, repeating it on the test. Truly studying history, I learned, is more than memorization of a previously told story and accepting it as true. In this class I have learned history is about actively engaging the material, picking apart the details and nuances, creating and using timelines, finding deeper meaning in the material, asking questions, then looking again and digging deeper. It is not a passive study and not about memorization as I believed at the beginning of the semester. History is about asking questions and looking for answers, not just accepting what is already there, but…
