Celaena stalks her victim and scales roofs, but Celaena has a two secrets, she has never killed anyone on the list. She gives them two options, you can either have her kill you or you leave in the night, never come back to your home, and never use your name again. Everyone has gone with the ladder. Also, Queen Elena has left her with a labyrinth of a maze that drives her to uncertainty about others. In the dramatic, but sadly realistic book Wintergirls, Laurie Halse Anderson tells the story of Lia, an anorexic teenager, after her closest friend Cassie mysteriously dies in a motel room. This engrossing book is suspenseful and breath-taking as Lia and her family take on many challenges and obstacles. More specifically, Wintergirls deals with real world problems such as children actually not eating and cutting themselves because they believe it cures their pain when they don’t even feel safe in their own bodies. This story of the challenges and responses in young teeenagers provides a frequently disturbing but important look into these real-life challenges that kids may go through. I found this story to be extremely sad and a bit disturbing,…

The author of King Leopold’s Ghost is Adam Hochfeld. In the book he describes being disappointed by the lack of interest by publishers to release his book. This was caused by the apparent lack of interest for African history among americans. This was until Mariner Books, a division of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, published it because (according to Hochfield) they had “more faith in reader’s ability to see connections between Leopold’s Congo and today” (Hochfield,309). He wrote his book in hopes to capture the attention of more people on Leopold’s atrocities.…

Midnight Rising: John Brown and the raid that sparked the Civil War is written by Tony Horwitz: a bestselling author and journalist who has taken the time to tell an essential American story. The book covers the events surrounding the raid on Harpers Ferry and the complex character of John Brown. Horwitz thesis explains that the raid on Harpers Ferry is the spark that lit the fire of secession and Civil War. John Brown grew as a descendent of Puritans and soldiers from the Revolutionary War, and his upbringing created his “burning hatred of racial oppression” (Horwitz, p.16) and “determination to help slaves” (Horwitz, p.19). He believed that the dissipation of slavery would fulfill America’s founding principles, so he began to lead raids…

A trickster may be someone whom: “cheats or deceives people” (Definition of Trickster). Maybe, in another view, a trickster would be described as: “someone who uses dishonest methods to get what they want” (Trickster American English). According to the “Course Glossary,” Lewis Hyde suggests, “tricksters are ‘boundary-crossers’ who do not accept physical, social, or temporal constraints as real, and who seem deliberately to blur culturally fixed lines of distinction.” A perfect example of a typical trickster, in Hyde’s eyes, is Shahrazad, from “The Thousand and One Nights.” In this story, Shahrazad risked her life because she did not like the way one man was acting.…
