The essay “Young Love” by Tiffany Sharples discusses diverse points concerning the idea of love throughout our lives. Humans desire for affection; we want to be loved and taken care of in order to feel adequate. The entire essay focuses on how we are equipped with the tools we need in order to receive love from others. At each stage of chronological development, we expose new understandings about ourselves and our own physical being that lay the foundation for the next stage of development. One of Sharples’ quote which sums up her entire argument is: “From the moment we're born--when the world is mostly sensation, and nothing much matters beyond a full belly, a warm embrace and a clean diaper--until we finally emerge into adulthood and understand…

In his book: Design For The Real World (1985), Victor Papanek explains that the tools and products he created during the 1970’s were designed with the help of the people they were intended for. He makes it clear that no matter what good intentions a ‘western’ thinker/designer might have to help local people of a developing country, one needs to have not only insight and understanding, through possibly having lived in the country themselves with its indigenous people, but also through close cooperation with the rural population. Only then can a design ‘fit’ within their environment. (Papanek, 1985). Although this book dates back to 1985, the human-centered principles remain an essential part of any design process, particularly when designing…

Today, everything is a product. From media to marketing and everything in between, the aim of design is to ensure a profit from an established relationship between product and audience. The goal is for the audience to buy whatever you are selling, whether it be physical products or intangible concepts, and the design must make your product entertaining without being so outlandish that the audience feels out of their depth, thus rejecting it entirely. As a result, originality is a scarce commodity. What could once be perceived as inspiration has led to more drastic measures of competitive plagiarism, sparking new laws of copyright and ownership.…

“Consumers Are Almost Like People”: Interpellation, Ideology and IKEA In 1976, Ingvar Kamprad produced his manifesto, “The Testament of a Furniture Dealer”. The intention of the writing was to give instruction to his IKEA co-workers about how “to create a better everyday life for the many people” through the adoption “of [a] framework of ideas” designed to “be a beneficial influence on practically all markets” (1976, pp. 2-3). By adopting such an ideological position, IKEA has been able to create a discourse that shifts the problems produced by notions of consumerism and consumer capitalism into a discourse of choice, freedom and happiness. O 'Shaughnessy & Stadler argue that through “language, texts and representations” within genres, it is…

Advertisements may seem straightforward to the consumer, but many actually require extensive curation, as subtle details like color scheme, setting, and strategic placement of the brand name are used to appeal to consumers’ underlying desires for popularity or success and this make the product more enticing. These trends are especially prevalent in ads for luxury items, which carry with them a mystique of sorts in addition to their practical function. Two major high-end fashion houses, Dolce & Gabbana (D&G) and Marc Jacobs, both regularly advertise their wares in magazines such a Vogue. Aside from this fact, however, the two labels are quite different. D&G is an Italian brand associated with the most glamorous of clothing and accessories,…

Two heavyweights of contemporary lifestyle design, IKEA and MUJI, are slugging it out for control of domestic life worldwide. The objects with which they do battle are remarkably similar - functional, simple, honest, and ornament-free tools for living. Mundane objects are imbued with the humane spirit of Scandinavian modernism or the Zen-like purity and humility of traditional Japan. The marketing and consumption of the two brands emphasise their fundamental differences by referencing widely held stereotypes of Swedish and Japanese design. Nevertheless, beyond these apparent differences, IKEA and MUJI can also be seen as united in a broader struggle to discipline the middle-class home through their aesthetic ordering.…
