Crow Canyon Reflection

Improved Essays
The most positive impact that this experience had had on me was the amount of learning that I had done over the two weeks at the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center. Although there were eight people in our Earthwatch team, we were the only ones at the center and could take advantage of the full resources and staff members on campus. By attending afternoon and evening lectures and applying the same knowledge to the next morning’s field work, I was able to not only pound raw information into my head but also enable me to make connections to how what I physically did was related to what I mentally absorbed. During my time at Crow Canyon, I learned to analyze various artifact pieces and also to categorize pottery shards and stone flakes modified

Process Paper When I started my topic search, I established a simple criterion: it had to be a local story and it needed to have a strong connection to a contemporary issue. Considering where I live—a desert city of seventy-five thousand—the search wouldn’t be simple. There was the Hanford project of course, but while it’s a monumental piece of history, I wasn’t interested in the topic. I wanted to research something complex and challenging, something that encouraged me to think differently. It was through my History advisor that I finally found my topic.…

Before going into this class, I always thought culture was just part of your background and you grew up with it. I saw it as something that had to do with your family history. Which, in a way it does, but that 's not what culture is all about. I always love learning more about other cultures and other people in general. Culture is not only a part of your family background, but impacts your point of view and how you see things.…

There is a stigma associated with attending Brookdale. It did not make sense to me, and I did not let it stop me. In my senior year of high school, I blatantly told everyone I was going to Brookdale and faced opposition. No one understood. I was in the top ten percent of my class.…

It showed me that there was much much more to see and to explore in the world, even if it seems like it’s all the same. Sure, you can say that a beach is a beach or every place has that, but a beach in California isn’t going to be the same as a beach in Florida or a beach in Brazil. It may not have white sand and sapphire waters, but the beach in Charleston will always be my first beach. The storms I experienced in Charleston will always be the origin point of my interest in bizarre weather. Charleston certainly isn’t New York or Los Angeles by any means of comparison, but it’s a place that gave me something more to see than the standard Midwest visuals I’m accustomed…

Imagine landowners in the 1900’s, who owned a wide swath of land that has been passed down through the generations. As they look out the window, they see rolling hills and verdant fields. But when they’re strolling the property, they have an epiphany that these are not just normal hills, but man made mounds. Imagine their shock and amazement as they discover what has been under what they thought were hills for all these years. This is what Mrs. Edith Pretty must have thought as she realized that her land contained one of the most important archaeological sites of the modern world - Sutton Hoo…

Digging on chocolate chips makes me feel an archeologist, that's why I think we did this activity so we can experience being an archeologist even though we were just basically digging a chocolate chip from a cookie. the best part on being like an archeoligist was excavating because it was so nerve-wracking because you think the artifactifact will break. There's a lot of challenges on being a paleontologistt because you have to search a lot of things, find some fossils, study some fossils, and many other things. If we were using a stale cookie, i think it will be more challenging because the cholochate chip will have a hard texture and it will be more harder to took out the chocolate chip form the cookie. I learned a lot in this activity like…

The summer before 6th grade, I was introduced to what would become one of the greatest passions I have in life: geology. This realization occurred while I visited the Grand Canyon and Garden of the Gods National Parks in the western United States. Consequently, while I explored these natural wonders, I found I wanted to discover and know the secrets these rocks held about their geological history, their specific formations, and other geological wonders such as the Tibetan Plateau and the Door to Hell in Turkmenistan. My career path as a budding geoscientist had begun. After this vacation, I enrolled myself in more Earth Science classes, read geology textbooks in my spare time, and volunteered at the local science museum to assist with general exhibits as well as ongoing geology summer camps for young children.…

Keller High’s Academic Decathlon team is well-renowned in the state of Texas. However, every team has its own weakness, and Keller’s is mathematics. Though we consistently score among the top schools in our state for the nine other events (outperforming every other team in the subjective events), we are almost always pulled down by our remarkably low math results. Having been a seasoned veteran in advanced and competition math, I volunteered to teach the concepts and applications of each year’s math topics. Compared to our performance before my freshman year (when I began coaching), our math scores had improved greatly after 2013.…

    Acting Versus Reality

It goes without saying that this was a unique experience that forced us to take a task and that we do daily or often and observe it very carefully in order to explore the differences between acting and reality and how to unify the two. Taking a task as simple as making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or cleaning a fish tank and breaking it up into detailed steps was more difficult than I had imagined, but it forced me to put my every day life under the magnifying glass and understand how I do thing and how I change little details in my life in order to fit the situation of the day. To begin with, it was difficult to choose a two-minute task that I knew I could break down fairly easily to show the class that would fulfill all of the expectations…

“We are not thriving. True, our people live, but our culture is dying. We are like a stone the ocean beats against. With each year a little more of us is worn away”, for all of Disney’s heart wrenching dialogues, this simple statement made by princess Kida, in the profoundly underrated movie “Atlantis, The Lost Empire”, affected me the most. The thought of a race that was once so magnificent losing its history and cultural background hit a little too close to home for me, having lived in Iran and been made to study something that translated into “Current History”, which is, by definition, an oxymoron.…

I have always had a passion for history and storytelling since I was a child and decided in seventh grade world history class that I wanted to be an archaeologist, discovering ancient cultures and uncovering their secrets. I maintained this plan, arriving at Boston University as an archaeology major but after several semesters of study realized that it wasn’t the exact path for me. I began to grow my appreciation of museums, admiring how they could ignite wonder, curiosity, and learning in myself and others. I realized this was where I felt most at home. Therefore, I decided to change my major to art history, while retaining an archaeology minor, and explore history through the lens of artist’s interpretations and ideas.…

Michael Nalley ATH 102 – Midterm Essay: Processual and Post-Processual Archaeology: The basic and primary purpose of archaeology is to help us understand humans. To move toward that end, most archaeologists pursue three basic goals, each building on the other. As in all science, archaeology begins with the discovery of new information, which then must be described. Ultimately, archaeology seeks to contribute to the development of a comprehensive understanding of human behavior.…
