Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy starts off in a shopping mall in Washington D.C. Cammie and her class are there as a field project. The assignment was to see if they can identify who is following them and get them off their trail. The teacher wants to see if the students can spy on people to figure out who is following them. Two boys start following Cammie and her partner Bex. They headed to the museum to meet their teacher and the boys went after them. The girls broke two important rules. They let the suspects follow them to their meeting spot and started conversations with them. They found out that the boys know their teacher. For one of their classes they were having a ball. It was a grade too, so she had to go. Cammie’s mom gave her a pretty red dress for the dance. When the ball came, Cammie had a lot of fun. She was having problems with her dress, so she wanted to go fix it. She wasn’t allowed to leave the dance so she had to sneak out. She went through special secret tunnels she has been using for years. She finally got to where she wanted to go and Zach was right behind her. He had followed her all the way down there. They started talking but then heard sirens. It was a code black! Blackthorne hasn 't had one of those in years. Cammie and Zach were terrified. They started running but doors were closing and lights were turning off on them. The ran to a teacher and asked what was going on. She told them to go to their rooms. Cammie and her friends started thinking: Do the Blackthorne boys have something to do with this? Their whole time at Gallagher Academy, there has never been a security breach. After the boys arrived there was not just one, but multiple security breaches. Cammie, Liz, Bex, and Macey went through the vents to the East Wing, where the boys were staying.
