Cross Lambert: A Short Story

Improved Essays
This is a story about a man named Cross Lambert.
“Hey Cross, aren’t you excited? You’re going to get your first command soon?”
“I don’t know Galius. I have been a lieutenant for so long, I don’t know how the men are going to adjust to my promotion.”
“Everyone knew you were going to be the next captain and you have many supporters, amazingly. You’re the perfect example for a high-ranking officer.”
“How so?“
“You follow orders to the letter and you are a devout follower of Zenith and the men will just be happy to leave this western outpost. They stationed us in Zarterith. Aren’t you from Zarterith, Cross?”
“Yes, I was born there.”
“Our assignment will give you an opportunity to visit your mother, the high priestess. Does she not have strong political ties? She could get you an audience with King Detnoss.”

“Is there a problem here, Cross?”
The men looked at Galius, surprise evident on his face. “You’re the one I have been searching for so many years. I was not sure who had it until just now.”
“What do you mean?” Cross asked the man, looking to see if Galius held something in his hand that this man might want, but he saw nothing unusual about his friend.
The man ignored Cross and spoke directly to Galius. “I’m sure you won’t understand what is about to happen to you, although I suppose, you should have the right to know why. I intend Galius, to take your soul because, you see, I am a collector of souls and your soul is very special since you have been gifted with an angel soul, a rare commodity in our world, and I must have it, but when I take it, you will die and unfortunately, you can do nothing to stop me, unless, which I seriously doubt, you have learned how to use your remarkable ability.”
“Take no offense, but I think you are out of your league.” Galius boasted fairly certain that he could easily defend himself against this old, probably drunk

Chapter One Zaphkiel sat on the green grass that was beginning to turn yellow, contently watching the pink and orange sky. The trees around him stood still, but the air was stiller as if the whole world were frozen in time. As the sun sank behind the horizon, a cold wind broke the stillness. Red and orange leaves fluttered to life in the gust of wind. Some of them broke free from their branches to dance in the breeze.…
