Cross Cultural Servanthood Analysis

Servant leadership is a concept that Christians are familiar with. Even though we have heard the concept, not all of us are able to fully execute it. When we add the concept of cross-cultural servanthood, it is even more complicated. In my opinion, our western culture feels superior to other cultures. The author of the book Cross-Cultural Servanthood, Duane Elmer, is a missionary and when in one of his mission trips, he received the following feedback, “Missionaries could more effectively minister the gospel of Christ if they did not think they were so superior to us” (Elmer, 2006, p. 15). On chapter 3, the author talks about the arrogance of humility. It was my favorite chapter. It takes self-awareness for one to be able to identify when one …show more content…

This is the total opposite of what Jesus did in the time he was here on earth. He would spend time with the people that were “rejects” of society; furthermore, the religious leaders reproached his actions. In my opinion, this is similar to when people needing of God visit a church and the members are staring at them and the visitor can feel the judgment coming from the congregation. In the same manner, if we are going to spread the love of God wherever we go, we must accept people for who they are and where they are. The fact that they are no believers does not make them any less than the believer that goes to church. Elmer even makes a point to share with the reader that one can learn from non-believers. I have experienced this in my current job, my boss is a non-believer, and he is so respectful and understanding. I have worked for faith-based organizations that talk down to their employees. In addition, my current boss is great at listening to people and making sure that the employees’ needs are meet in order for them to be successful at their job. This was an eye opening experience for me, that a non-believer can teach me about being kind to

THINK: Why does the African American servant stay with her all those years? In "A Rose for Emily" one of the more interesting characters is the African American servant briefly introduced as, Tobe. He's seemingly more mysterious than the central role of Emily Grierson, and, ironically, the only libal source concerning the secrecy behind the house's closed doors. One can speculate that Tobe was born into slavery on the plantation owned by Mr. Grierson and had stayed with the family through the Civil War; thus developing a relationship with Emily as a devoted caretaker.…

However, for over the last six decades, one the most influential authors for the terminology and study of servant leadership, is a man that goes by the name of Robert K. Greenleaf. In his studies, Robert K. Greenleaf describes servant leadership as a type of leader that serves others, rather than the followers serving the leader. Doing so will have the followers achieve and improve. As any leader, they are responsible for the followers and those that are not on the same level as others. The people served grow as individuals, becoming 'healthier, wiser, more autonomous and more likely themselves to become servants' (Greenleaf, 1977).…

John 13:13 Ye call Me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am The curious thing about Our Lord is that He never insists on our obedience. When we begin to usurp authority and say “You must” and “you shall” it is a sure sign that we are out of touch with the supreme Authority.…

Therefore, it is important after our conversion that we are mindful of our behavior. On the other hand, he argues that this expectation is unreasonable for several reasons: (1) In the Christian camp, everyone is not at the same level of conviction. Some may be getting stronger in their beliefs, while some may be getting weaker, (2) Even if two people start the growth process with the same level of conviction, each starts at a different level of growth, and (3), Progress in Christian growth is directly related to the willingness of the individual to freely give himself to God. Therefore, it is important for non-Christians and Christians alike to remember that God became man, not necessarily to make men nicer, but to make sons of God — a new kind of…

There were many servant leaders I met in my life, for example my dad, preacher in my family’s church or my parent’s friend, a missionary worker in Bangladesh – people who I admired and sometimes I didn’t know why. When I looked back, they all were leaders, who never cared about themselves more than about other people. They all helped others on their ways to success and life improvements and often weren’t seen behind their work. Lao-tsu says: “the people do not notice [best leaders] existence… the people say, ‘We did it ourselves!” This is something that amazes me.…

Servant Leadership: Leading the Way to a More Just and Caring World Amberlie Silva Denver School of Nursing Servant Leadership: Leading the Way to a More Just and Caring World Throughout history, leadership has been portrayed as the sole responsibility of select individuals that were chosen through circumstance or job title to do and achieve great things (Rogers, 2009).
